Poll: Who is Chelsea’s most important player?
By: Jack | August 3rd, 2009I don’t know if you heard, but there was this small announcement a couple of weekends ago from England’s Brave John Terry. JT committed himself to the Chelsea cause after minor flirtation — which he denies for some odd reason — with the idea of joining the Manchester City empire.

Now, former Blue Mateja Kezman has chimed in on the subject via an exclusive interview with skysports.com.
Says the man who netted just seven times in 27 appearances during his one forgettable campaign at Chelsea:
“I was in no doubt that he would stay because I know how much he loves the club and I know his spirit about the club,” Kezman said. “I was sure that he would stay all the time.
“It was very important because he is the most important player there, even with the stars like (Frank) Lampard
and (Didier) Drogba he is the number one because he is somebody who keeps all the players together.
“He is the gaffer in the dressing room, the big boss you know, and also a very good person so he is an important guy. His character gives a lot to Chelsea all the time.”
This begs the question: Why the hell would I listen to Mateja Kezman?
More over, it brings up an interesting point: Is John Terry Chelsea’s most important player? Better yet, who is Chelsea’s most important player.
I, for one, don’t believe it is EBJT — but that’s just me. Let me know what you think, people.

Essien, no question. The fact that Lampard has such a dramatic lead is totally dismaying. He’s fine for lower tier EPL teams but disappears in big games.
Meanwhile, Essien is almost always a lynch-pin of the midfield.
If I could pick 3 players around which to build a Chelsea team from scratch, it would be Essien/Cole/Drogba.

I see your point, Vitaliy, but must disagree with regard to Lampard. This man carried us for large portions of last season, particularly under Scolari — coincidentally when we did not have Essien.
I rate Essien more than Lampard — because of his versatility — but I must opt for Super Frank as our most important piece at the moment.

Super Frank ? ohh the “deflection king”.

Frank scores goals. Goals win games. Simple really. Essien is a tank, and something completely different to Lamps. I wouldn’t trade either of them for anyone.

Saying that Lampard disappears in big games is wrong in my opinion he contributes a lot to the team and if he doesn’t score it’s the work that he puts in which seems to go unnoticed by many, he scores a lot of goals but it is the work that many people don’t notice that makes him a super player

Lampard for sure. He has scored exactly 100 goals in the last 5 seasons. He is a midfielder. He deserves to be captain. Enough said.

Hey vitality, either u have a real short memory or u hate Chelsea/Lampard……let me cancel out ur BIG GAME theory
– 2004 – Arsenal in the CL quarter final – Lampard scored and knockedout the gunners
– 2005 – broke the record of scoring from midfield to win chelsea their first league title
– if u remember the left foot volley against Bayern Munich?????
– 2006 – 2-2 draw against Barca in the CL at Nou Camp – Lampard salvaged the draw with a magnificent chip over valdes
– FA Cup 2007 – Put in the delightful first time chip over the manutd defense to allow Drogba to win the game for us
– FA Cup semi 2009 – put in 2 assists to again knock the gunners out
– FA cup final – who scored the winning goal???? Lampard did
– Won us games at crucial times last season under scolari – remember wigan, fulham and st
– Scores or assists in nearly all games vs Liverpool or Arsenal in the past few seasons– Last season Essien scored 3 goals after coming back from injury…all were Lampard assists
next time do ur homework mate

Lampard is a fat, big-game-bottler, who only scores deflections…

Really, people are still using the fat and deflection mantras? SMH

Got to be JT. Lamps is a close second.
Lamps is a better player, and I rate him as perhaps the top midfield playmaker in Europe, but JT’s leadership means more to the squad. JT is the backbone of the team and the glue that holds Chelsea FC together; without him we would be lost.
Essien is one of the most physically talented midfielders in the world, but there is no way he means as much to the team.

It is so difficult to rate a single player as the most important because it’s such a team based sport. One could make the argument that Lampard would not have been nearly as successful had it not been for Makelele, Essien, or any of the other more defensive midfielders who allow him to get forward and into scoring opportunities. But the fact of the matter is, every Chelsea attack is mounted through Frank Lampard. Back with Makelele, he’d disrupt the opponent’s attack, find Lampard and get him the ball, and Lampard would pull the strings and create an attack. EBJT is always solid, but he’d have to be as good as he was in 05-06 to be considered to be as important as Super Frank.
Essien is one of my favorite because his playstyle mirrors my own – long driving runs in the midfield, physical play and simple distribution of the ball. He’s great. But the only reason I’d rate him lower than Super Frank is goals. As someone mentioned above me, Super Frank scores goals and goals win games. End of story. I can’t believe people are still using the “deflection” thing to deny his tremendous goal scoring prowess. Who was it that said, “If Frank Lampard only scores from deflections, then that’s an AWFUL lot of deflections?”
Bottom line: a goal is a goal even if you score it with your dick.

Zaid, don’t tell ME to do MY homework, and then introduce your argument with statistics that are 4-5 years old.Let’s break down his 2008-2009 season:
Total goals scored? 20
That’s 12 Prem goals, 3 CL goals, 2 League Cup goals, and 3 FA cup goals.
How many of those EPL goals were against Big 4 teams? Zero.
How many of his CL goals were against title contenders? 0
The man relies solely on potshots and wonder-strikes to set up his opportunity. He scored twenty goals with 102 shots on goal. Iniesta scored sixteen goals with only 38 shots on goal. Gerrard scored 29 with 80 shots on goal and sixty less total shots .
How many of his 20 assists game against mainstay teams? 3.
He’s a slow, old school player who relies on the talent around him to win the ball, and then has the occasional good pass or wonder-strike.
Against low-tier teams, he can put it in the net.
Against Arsenal, and an out of form Liverpool, he can do assists at best…and even then, inconsistently. Any higher than that and he’s a non-factor.He’s at his best when Michael Essien (and previously Makelele) lies deep, wins the ball on breakaway, and gift-wraps it for him.

Vitaliy, it’s fine to have an opinion, but this you have just written is pure nonsense. You’re argument is flawed in so many ways.
In fact, I refuse to provide a counterargument — I’ll let the readers do that.

oh yes i am sure liverpool were out of form last year when they had their best season to date…cant wait to see an on-form liverpool winning the league…whats it been? 20 years or so????? quit yanking us all
to correct u gerrard scored 24 (not 28) goals last season and 8-9 penalties included…..that gives him 17 goals from open play at best…the same amount Lampard scored from open play…lampard scoored 20 including 3 penalties………if u look at the opta stats you would also know that Lampard had twice the amount of key passes and was joint highest assister in the league..regarding the shot statistics yes he scored more but why shouldnt he?? since when is trying to shoot a crime in football??? you dont score until u shoot buddy!
lastly u say lampard relies on Makalele and Essien to win the ball……i only half agree with you…….that is what defensive midfielders are for….to win the ball and pass it on to an attacker…and lampard does track back to win the ball otherwise Mr Capello wouldnt have altered his position to defensive midfielder in the England setup….and coincidentally, didnt Gerrard have his best season to date because Alonso and Mascherano were given the job of winning the ball?????????
lastly your theory o fluke wonder strike gosals is as good as shit….could you please tell me how long before a game does Gerrard plan on using those holllywood passes/goals…..so when gerrard does it it is brilliant when lamps does it its a fluke????? shove off dude

if the ball goes in the net, it’s a goal .. i’d take Gerrard tripping over the ball and knocking it into the net with his ass if it posted 3 points for us ..
…and to answer the question, it’s got to be Essien ..

lampard does not disappear in big games. in both second leg CL games vs liverpool the last couple years hes won us the game single handedly. and those are the games ive most wanted to win. i think essien is second, hes incredible but lamps is our most important player.
