Earlier in the week, both the Guardian and Independent — reputable members of the British media in my view — claimed Chelsea were ready to throw around £40 million at Atletico Madrid for striker Sergio Aguero in the January transfer window.

Move forward a couple of days. Now, we’re reading — via the Sun — that Inter Milan are looking to hijack the move. Or, perhaps you prefer the stories reporting that Roman Abramovich is souring on the idea of blowing a British record fee on the 21-year-old Argentinian.

So, I ask: What are you feelings on the man who is rearing Diego Maradona’s grandchild? Should Chelsea splash the cash on Kun Aguero? Let me know.

“Over the next five years we’ve still got to shoot for the stars,” Gourlay said. “I’d still like to think we can win the Champions League twice in the next five years. That might sound aggressive, but I think we can still do it.”

I don’t know if you heard, but there was this small announcement a couple of weekends ago from England’s Brave John Terry. JT committed himself to the Chelsea cause after minor flirtation — which he denies for some odd reason — with the idea of joining the Manchester City empire.

Now, former Blue Mateja Kezman has chimed in on the subject via an exclusive interview with skysports.com.

Says the man who netted just seven times in 27 appearances during his one forgettable campaign at Chelsea:

“I was in no doubt that he would stay because I know how much he loves the club and I know his spirit about the club,” Kezman said. “I was sure that he would stay all the time.

“It was very important because he is the most important player there, even with the stars like (Frank) Lampard and (Didier) Drogba he is the number one because he is somebody who keeps all the players together.

“He is the gaffer in the dressing room, the big boss you know, and also a very good person so he is an important guy. His character gives a lot to Chelsea all the time.”

This begs the question: Why the hell would I listen to Mateja Kezman?

More over, it brings up an interesting point: Is John Terry Chelsea’s most important player? Better yet, who is Chelsea’s most important player.

I, for one, don’t believe it is EBJT — but that’s just me. Let me know what you think, people.

Whatever you want to call them, Chelsea had ‘em this season — in abundance. From Super Frank’s absurd chip against Hull to Essien’s mother of all volleys against Barcelona, it was truly an unforgettable year for Blues goals.

The question is: Which was is the best (c. Essien)? I put it to you proud readers of Chelsea Offside, let your voice be heard. Last season, just 60 people voted in our annual goal of the season poll. This time ’round, I expect more than 100 votes. So run and tell a friend; alert your mom, even your mistress. Let’s make this happen, people.

Let the voting begin.

So, I ask you, will Ancelotti capture the Champions League during his tenure at Stamford Bridge. It’s a tough question to answer. But, with Chelsea knocking on the door the last two seasons, it seems quite plausible.

Have your say.

Tomorrow, Chelsea’s player of the year awards will be held. You can see the event live on ChelseaTV from 9 p.m.

In lieu of the ceremony, I’m interesting in your view on the subject. Who has been the man this year? I put it to you Chelsea Offside readers, lets settle the debate.

There certainly have been plenty of candidates. At the front of the list has to be Frank Lampard, who has been absolutely phenomenal. Of course, the English midfielder has been amazing for the better part of the past five years. But you guys know just how amazing he’s been this campaign.

Super Frank isn’t the only worthy winner, though. Ashley Cole, for my money, has been on par with Frank every step of the way this year. England’s Brave John Terry has, as always, been a rock. Alex has come in to the team seamlessly and Nicolas Anelka has bagged goals whenever called upon. Even Florent Malouda deserves a shout for his superlative close to the 2008-09 season.

So, people, get on here and vote! On Friday, I’ll close the voting and we’ll name our inaugural Chelsea Offside Player of the Year. The winner will, of course, get a nice article done on them. If it’s Lampard’, I may just copy and paste the “Case for Frank Lampard” post I did a few days back.

I leave it to you, my friends. Let the best man win.

This week in Chelsea football has been dominated by rumors involving Carlo Ancelotti.

The current AC Milan manager was strongly linked with the Blues’ vacant managerial position in the summer and now it appears the 49-year-old is at the top of the list once again. Stories have varied, with some going as far as to say a pre-contract agreement has already been struck between the two parties.

Ancelotti has strongly denied this, and even pledged his future to Milan earlier in the week. There were even reports suggesting Chelsea had given the manager an ultimatum in the wake of his denials.

The most revealing news, however, was that of Milan president Silvio Berlusconi vehemently attacking Ancelotti’s tactics this season. The first sentence of the quote says it all, really.

“We lost the title because of Ancelotti,” Berlusconi was quoted as saying this week. “Many times we did not use the right tactics. We have so many good ball players and should have based our football on this asset, but we did the opposite.”

Whoa. So does this mean Milan are done with the man who has won a pair of Champions League titles. Not so much. The latest developments say Berlusconi was misquoted. The club’s general manager, Adriano Galliani, had this to say: “I just spoke on the telephone with president Berlusconi and he was flabbergasted to read what was written. I have also talked with him over the past few days and his ideas were not the same as those attributed to him.”

Hell, the Sun reckons Chelsea will unveil Ancelotti tomorrow. Watch this space.

Enough with all this nonsense. Give me something I can use, like a user poll? Those are about as concrete as it gets I’d say.

So people, let me know what you think. Will Carlo lead the Blues next season. Or will we be forced to settle for someone like Marco Van Basten? Please, no.

Guus Hiddink isn’t merely here to restore stability. The man expects to win.

“They are in several races: the FA Cup is there, the Champions League and also the league,” Hiddink told Chelsea TV. “There is a 10-point difference (if United win) but if you look in the past at this league, and other leagues as well, some things can happen during the final stages of the championship.

“All three roads are very important: the next game (in the FA Cup) at Watford, and then Aston Villa and Juventus, and then you go on the path of the Champions League and that is so attractive. The club has the experience to go to the final. When I was at Real Madrid we did not win the league title. I haven’t worked in England, which is considered the biggest league in the world, so (winning) would be a huge achievement. We try to go for this title, yes. I am not just here to add to my experience with the club and the Premier League. I want to see results as soon as possible.”

Do you believe him? Can we, in fact, win something this season? Let me know. In the second poll, I ask you where you think we’ll finish in the league. Hiddink says first … and I believe him.
