FA Youth Cup Final: City denies Blues

Manchester City’s youth academy continues to buzz. Chelsea’s, despite a cash influx the likes of nothing ever seen, has yet to truly flourish.
City captured only its second FA Y0uth Cup ever Wednesday, rallying to defeat the Blues 3-1 (4-2 aggregate) at City of Manchester Stadium. Chelsea opened the scoring after just seven minutes, Jacob Mellis’s shot superbly saved but diverting over the goalline by Manchester defender Ray McGivern.
The Citizens didn’t trail for long. Midway through the first half, City pulled level when a Andrew Tutte crossing pass was headed in by captain Ben Mee. Later, Vladimir Weiss’ curling free kick gave the hosts a deserved lead.
Chelsea showed verve after the break, displaying plenty of attacking prowess. However, the Blues were undone for good when Weiss was hauled down by Sergio Rodriguez on the counter. David Ball converted the penalty kick and, to add to Chelsea’s misery, Mellis was sent off for a rash challenge on Kieran Trippier.
It’s a bitter end to a fine run. But let’s not forget, the Chelsea youth team hadn’t reached a final for 47 years. Cheers to the entire Academy staff on a superb display.
