Zola Wants To Manage — Just Not Yet

By: Jack | March 14th, 2008

zola.jpgThe legend of Stamford Bridge has his eyes on Chelsea’s most critical position — manager. Speaking at the launch of La Gazzetta dello Sport’s new English website, Gianfranco Zola said he would, in fact, be interested in taking the reins of his former club at some point. He did, however, say his not yet qualified for such a demanding position (aaaand Avram Grant breathes a sigh of relief).

“I would be crazy to say no,” Zola said. “Let’s put it this way, one day I would like to be good enough to manage Chelsea. It is in my heart. Mr Abramovich has been very good to me and asked me a couple of times to go back to Chelsea to work but what’s the point of going there and not having anything to do for the club? The way I see it is that I want to go there when I know I can give something back to the club.

“I have been working for just one year, not as a manager but as an assistant to Casiraghi, so I can’t really say I am good enough to be the manager of one of the best teams in Europe. I need to improve and my experience with the Under-21s has been very good. I have learned a lot in a year and a half and I hope I will carry on this way.”

Thoughts on this? I can’t see any Chelsea fan not being open to this possibility, even if it’s clear he still lacks experience. It’s well-documented he’s a friend of Roman, too. I say bring him in — and tell Ten-Cate to have one.

Love Zola and I would love to see him come back to the Bridge perhaps as Stevie Clarkes’ assistant. This man could spot a future version of himself wouldn,t that be great……love the little guy

We all know that Zola is a legend and always will be… however coming back as a manager he is too much of a gentleman…. or am I being too cynical?

I am with the first poster. I’d *LOVE* to see Zola back–as Steve Clarke’s top assistant.

Zola would make a fantastic manager .. don’t know if he has the chops to manage your lot as of yet but it would still be fantastic to see him involved again .. can’t do any worse than Avram ..
