FA Youth Cup Semifinal: Manchester United 4 – 0 Chelsea

By: Jamie | April 21st, 2011

So ends a great run for the youth team.

It was a fun ride, but the youth team crashed out of the Youth Cup last night after apparently forgetting to turn up for the second leg of the semifinal. The scoreline is a little harsh on the boys, but the usual desire seemed to be missing. There were some great chances, such as a fantastic skip through a few defenders by Aziz Deen-Conteh, but no one seemed to be willing to pull the trigger and try to score until the chance had already passed. Nobody seemed to remember how to pass to someone in blue. They would mostly pass into open space, allowing the Mancs to regain possession. A very, very frustrating evening, because the boys are better than the display they showed last night.

Reflecting upon the Youth Cup as a whole for the Chelsea boys, it’s hard not to be impressed by our youth system. Dermot Drummy has done a fantastic job in charge of these kids. Billy Clifford, George Saville, Jamal Blackman, Milan Lalkovic, Nathaniel Chalobah, amongst many others… there are promising youngsters coming through the ranks. And even if they don’t make it into the first team, I’m proud to see them develop their skills and abilities at Chelsea.

The cup run may be over, but the youth league will go on. And just for fun, to end on a positive note, here’s the Crossbar Challenge from a few months ago:

If anyone wants a good read up on the game there's an unbiased report here:

    Have you read it?

  • Self promotion? OK then.

  • I felt sorry for the boys last night. Once their first goal went in - their heads dropped. The game reminded me of the 1994 FA Cup Final when Utd beat us 4-0. We held our own for a long time and Gavin Peacock hit the bar, but once their first goal went and David Elleray giving Utd TWO penalties in atrocious conditions - the result was a farce, just like last night.

Our boys didn't deserve that and if the judge had done his job their wonderkid, Morison, should have been in jail.

Still we are used to Utd having their own way - at all levels

Your boys got mullered fair and square mate.....harping back to 94, what's all that about? McEachran was done by Tunnicliffe, Morrison literally took the piss and was helped by your boys standing off him all night. The ref was anonymous and had a great game so don't blame him, Blackman is possibly the worst keeper at academy level, Todd Kane bottled it last night, Pappoe wasn't fit and shouldn't have played, Bobby Devyne hopeless and Lalkovic wasteful as usual. Utd's first was a lucky deflection but came after a 20 pass build up....class....2nd Kane stood off when he shouldn't have, great cross, defenders asleep, Blackman useless with anything close to him, Will Keane easy header....thanks....3rd...Morrison allowed too much space, Blackett unmarked/chased, nice cross, Keane given two chances to fumble it in.....terrible defending.....4th.....too easy....good night vienna! Only got yourselves to blame I'm afraid, but if it helps to blame Utd or the refs or the judges then crack on fella......while we'll win the cups!
