Let’s wrap this one up: Bravo, boys

By: Jack | May 6th, 2009

Sure, I’m angry. Yes, I’m pi**ed. But, really, what can you do?

Chelsea left it all on the pitch Wednesday, coming within seconds of a second consecutive appearance in the Champions League final. Those who wanted football got it; the Blue, for large portions of the match, toyed with the Barcelona defense. Well, let’s be honest here, the Blues dominated this match save for a minute of extra time.

Of course, Barca dominated possession as has become standard for a match featuring the likes of Messi, Eto’o, Iniesta and Xavi. However, those transcendent attackers fell victim to the relentless, unwavering power of the Chelsea defense. Barcelona produced only one shot on goal, an Iniesta dagger in the 94th minute that earned the Catalans a date with Manchester United in Rome. And even that was a fluke, Essien somehow losing his footing when a simple clearance looked all too simple.

It was harsh on the Ghanaian who solidified himself as one of the five best players in the world — yeah, I said it — with his box-to-box melee on Barca heads. His goal, a miraculous volley from just outside the penalty area, is the stuff of myths.

Barca, and fans alike, will no doubt feel they deserve to be in Rome alongside United. It’s a victory for football they say. One shot on goal is a victory for football? To each is his own, I guess.

Chelsea, however, as Frank Lampard remarked before this second leg, probably feel cursed. It was footing that cost the Blues a first CL title a year ago. This season, disappointment came in the form of a sparkling strike from the man with the biggest head on earth.

The blue half of London has to be proud, though. This was a performance worthy of praise. If not for some wasted opportunities, particularly from Didier Drogba, this one would have been over well before the final minutes. Yes, dubious officiating played a role , but now that I’ve calmed down a bit I’m not going to complain. We had our chances; we should’ve buried them.

John Terry was masterful. So, too, was the entire team for that matter. Cech had little to do and Anelka may well have failed to match his form from the weekend, but this team truly showed why it’s become one of the world’s elite. Hiddink as well, over his few months in charge, has display the kind of steel and tactical nous needed for this position. If only we could persuade him to stay on permanently.

Regarding the Drogba substitution: Is it me or was he injured prior to being subbed. I know people are giving Hiddink slack for removing him but, at least to me, he appeared to be struggling with a knee knock just before. I can’t imagine Guus wouldn’t have wanted him on the pitch at that point.

As for this Chelsea’s classlessness, I can’t defend the actions of Drogbs & Co. after the final whistle. What I can do is let Pep Guardiola tell it…

“I want to thank John Terry for coming into the dressing-room and congratulating us. He’s a true gentleman,” Guardiola said after the match.

We’ve stil got one piece of hardware to collect this year, boys. Let’s go get it at Wembley.

And to everyone criticizing the Chelsea players’ post-match reactions:
Who cares? You’re missing the point. However Drogba reacted has nothing to do with the main story here, except to serve as some sort of manifestation of the injustice this referee has commit against football.
Here’s what is relevant: Chelsea were denied 2 clear-cut penalties and 2 judgment-call penalties.
Here’s what is totally irrelevant: How the players reacted after the match.”

Ok lets talk about the match then. I think for much of the second half Chelsea squandered chances cos they felt they were destined to win. I think they reacted the way they did at the end of the game cos they thought they were going to win and they took there foot off the pedal. Could have scored a second which would have made everything else irrelevant. But they didnt.

If Chelsea are ever gunna win the CL they gotta realise winning squads win, losing squads complain about refs

I have learned a lesson that I should never invest too much emotional energy nor exhaustive expectation to a capricious-natured UEFA CL football match.

Expect broken-hearted as always…That will keep me sane.

Even when joy and elation has been sustained for 93 minutes…

I said that before and I know I will say it again, until next season…Damn soccer game heartless irony.(And I love it.)

Patcook, you should be ashamed of yourself!!!
If you had the rationale to think logically instead of through hate, you would have denounced the refereeing.
If you are from Australia, as your flag indicates, then your character is even more pitiful. Remember the World Cup 2006:Italy vs Australia. At the last second, the last play the referee unjustly awarded Italy a PK. That was a conspiracy and yet you Aussies kept quiet about it and accepted your fate.I was pissed that day! Today’s refereeing was a classic gargantuan conspiracy, and Drogba-Ballack were more than justified to act as they did. Its a “f***** disgrace”! I would have put a hole in that referee’s ball head.
If you are Australian,It’s disgraceful that you root against Hiddink,a man who brought glory to Australia in 2006 WC. Your points are rubish, irrelevant, and biased.
If you have a beef with Chelsea, fine, but you are nothing but an opportunistic hater.
Chelsea may have lost but Chelsea will not go gently into that good night. We will back for Good will eventually Prevail over Evil.
I used to Love Australia until you came around.

Did Iniesta even get a yellow for taking off his shirt? If he had I think he would of missed the final, but of course Mr. Ovrebo probably missed it too…

ah, it is so sad that you cannot see the real injustice of this, i am not a supporter of either team, but it is just such a pity that people let their affiliations to the teams they support affect their out-look, do you not realise that next time it may be your team that is treated unfairly.. if chelsea had been beaten tonight, even by five goals in a fair game, i bet you would not have heard one word of complaint from any fan or manager or tv pundit.. but they were robbed of a place in the final by corrupt or if you like bad referee decisions. and that in my book is dispacable.. i do not condone drogbas out burst, but after such treatment i can only imagine how disappointed and cheated the team must feel.. i think more truth’s will come to light about this game in the next few weeks, but i will say this, it will do nothing for the game of football i love so much.. tonight shame has been brought upon our game, chelsea were totally discriminated against, when did any one ever see such blatant disregard for the rules of the game.. you can say one two three or four penalty calls but when none are given questions have to be asked.. its a disgrace to every true football fan.

    LOL, Chelsea.
    Im the irrational one?
I am australian, but my heart lies with Italy when it comes to football as I grew up as a Milan fan and subsequently followed their players at international level. So the WC second round match didnt bother me. I was happy for either of them to go through. And ii think it was a penalty, if it wasnt than Chelsea certainly didnt deserve any penalties today except maybe the handball.

Its funny. you could swear Chelsea were an italian team with all this conspiracy talk. Im not sure whether Drogba reflects on the fans or the fans reflect on Drogba cos youve all been really bad losers.

As a milan supporter i know what its like. Sheva scored in the CL semi against Barca in 06 and a bad ref call meant it was disallowed. I was upset but had the balls to admit milan should have done better and not let it come down to refereeing decisions.

You can say chelsea recieved more bad decisions but you guys had your chances. im suprised none of you have even once blamed Drogba for missing those sitters.

And Chelsea, why do i have to continue to support Hiddink? He was only ever a mercinary as Australian manager anyway. He had the job for less than a year and spent most of that time at Ajax. And honestly, I blame him for the loss to Italy. After Materazzi got sent off he should have been much more aggressive rather than play possession football. guess you could say the same thing about tonight

    UEFA: The Enemy Of Football
Written by Liam Randles on June 4th, 2007
You are here: Home » Comment and Opinion » UEFA: The Enemy Of Football

Last year when Michel Platini was elected head of UEFA, I immediately knew it was bad news. I said that the second something even remotely unpleasant happens surrounding us, Platini and the rest of his cronies in their Nyon ivory towers will come down hard on us. It may sound churlish to say, but the man bears a grudge against Liverpool Football Club. Go back 22 years to the Heysel disaster when Platini was denied the crowning moment in his career, a winning goal in a European Cup final, due to that match being regarded as many as a farce, a game that never should have been played. Platini himself was lambasted for celebrating after scoring his penalty and, like other members of the Juventus side, for celebrating after the final whistle when 39 fans lost their lives due to a horrible concoction of mismanagement and disorganisation on the part of UEFA in selecting a delapadated stadium to stage the showpiece of the European game, provocation on the part of the “Ultras”, who hoisted up banners bearing slogans such as “English Animals” and reaction on behalf of Liverpool fans. Fast forward to 2007 and it is clear that UEFA have not learned a single thing.

Before I start, I admit that sections of Liverpool “fans” must take their share of the blame for the Athens debacle. I’ve got no time for those who bunked into the ground and knowingly bought forged tickets, leaving up to 2,000 genuine ticket holders (including my dad) stranded outside the Olympic Stadium. The fans who snatched tickets from those deemed “less worthy” than others on account of their accent also ought to be hung out to dry and only the censorship on this site with regards to swearing has stopped me from saying what I really feel about that element of our support.

However, I can’t even begin to explain the incompetence of UEFA. The saying “couldn’t organise a piss up in a brewery” is one of the most overused cliches around, but it doesn’t do the organisation of the European Cup final justice. I feel since I’ve come back from Athens, I’ve just regurgitated the same things over and over again but the fact that a ground without turnstiles can stage the biggest match in club football is simply mind boggling. Add to that the lack of proper ticket checking and scanning as well as heavy handed policing and stewarding and what you have is just one big unbelievable mess.

From memory, there was a ticket check to get into an large concrete plaza situated just outside the Olympic Village, one to access the Olympic Village, two hologram scanners from there on and a final ticket check. It really speaks volumes for the incompetence of UEFA and the Greek Officials when so many people can bunk into a stadium with checks such as these. Stories have circulated that people accessed the stadium showing stewards any matter of objects from cigarette packets to tourist leaflets. It was reported that one fan even got in showing nothing but his Liverpool Fan Card. One of the people travelling in my party, with a genuine ticket I might add, got in without even having his hologram scanned, another of my mates was waved through before he could unfold his ticket that was kept in his pocket and I, like thousands of others, never had the stub of my ticket ripped off. All in all, a complete shambles.

It was naive of UEFA to ask only fans with tickets to travel. Even though I myself had a ticket, I and thousands of others, would have travelled over without one on the off chance of getting one over there, or failing that, to soak up the atmosphere. I couldn’t comprehend why a big screen wasn’t erected inside the Olympic Village. If that happened, I’d imagine that not as many would have tried to get into the ground by illegal means and turnstiles and decent stewarding and policing would have put paid to the rest.

The idea that what we saw in Athens is an “English problem” has long been banded around but let me ask you, when was the last time you heard of surges at the gates at an FA Cup Final? When was the last time thousands upon thousands bunked into a ground in this country? When was the last time that mass ticket forgeries were available so freely, and more to the point, when was the last time that there were so many success stories with counterfeits in this country? The fact is that UEFA need to dig their heads out of the sand and look at how things are ran here and learn from their mistakes. It will be interesting to see if an English club gets to the UEFA Cup Final next year in Manchester and see if any of the scenes we saw in Athens are repeated.

Recently, we’ve been branded “the worst fans in Europe” by Platini’s lickspittle, William Gaillard after “25 incidents” have been recorded against us since 2003. The fact that he uses the stealing of flags from the final to justify his remark is laughable when you look at some events which have occurred in Italian football in recent years; such as the death of a police officer at the Sicilian derby between Catania and Palermo, flares thrown onto the pitch at the Milan derby in 2005, a lighter thrown at former referee Anders Frisk at the Stadio Olimpico in a Champions League match between Roma and Dynamo Kiev, as well as fans of ourselves, Middlesbrough and Man United hospitalised recently when playing away in Rome. Add to that the attack on referee Herbert Fandel at Saturday’s European Championship Qualifier between Sweden and Denmark and the death of another police man in Paris amid a race riot during this year’s UEFA Cup match between PSG and Hapoel Tel Aviv and Gaillard’s remarks suddenly lose all credibility. When examing incidents such as these, especially since Gaillard added about us avoiding sanctions, I suggest UEFA need to get some perspective.

Platini and Gaillard only need to travel to the various cities which have hosted Liverpool down the years to find that the inhabitants will be full of praise for our behaviour, support and colour. At the same time, speak to fans from Europe who have come to Anfield and you’ll find that they’ll have been made more than welcome. The fact that UEFA praised our support and sporting attitude after the 2001 UEFA Cup Final and 2005 European Cup Final further makes a mockery of their stance towards us following the final.

The old saying goes that a leopard can’t change it’s spots and if anything, what happened at the European Cup Final and the fallout from it, proves that UEFA remain the same incompetent, spineless, corrupt, buck- passing, organsiation they always were and it would appear that in the form of Michel Platini, they have their perfect leader and their actions as of late have proved their slogan “For The Good Of The Game” to be nothing more than a flashy soundbite. Probably to appeal to corporate sponsors I’d imagine, but that’s another story…

Eamon, the only reason u get support from liverpool on this one is that all you Brits see it as an us vs them thing.
Pomes have been barking on about their superiority for the last few years and now youve convinced yourselves everyones out to get you.
I dont know what that article had to do with the Chelsea – Barca game. I will say that I hate Platini and you can check my blog for proof. But he does have a point, british fans have been invlolved in a lot of crowd troubles in recent years, often when on the road. Just cos there are no problems in England doesnt mean Pomes dont misbehave on the road. Tho I dont think theyre necessarily the worst.

Eamon you say that this incident is bad for football but i cant disagree more. Football isnt some two-bit regional sport like Rugby Union, Cricket, Gaelic football or even that stupid Aussie Rules. Its the Worlds greatest sport and all todays events only feed into the Barca-Chelsea rivalry thats been building for the last half decade. Next time they play eachother TV audiences will be through the roof.

No you are right, Drogba WAS injured; but he healed by the time hiddink subbed him. Just like the 3 or 4 times he got injured in the second leg of the quarterfinals. I still don’t know why hiddink subbed him though, there was 20 minutes left! that’s enough time to get injured at least once or twice more.

Drogba calling ANYTHING a fucking disgrace is, in itself, a fucking disgrace.

Simple really, Drogba & Anelka aren’t up to playing on the world stage when the pressure is on and they are playing a good team. Terry also falls into that category – good against Stoke but put him under the pump…..

Checking in from cule land to say that you guys played us off the pitch. This is a cruel game sometimes. I was pretty sure that the wonder strike from Essien would get you through.

The refs missed penaltes in both legs, but I think we can all agree that he was shit tonight, from the absurd free kick awarded for the Alves/Malouda coming together to the Abidal straight red.

I wish it had been a clear-cut decision for someone, rather than people being able to blame the ref. I truly do. Your lads played their hearts out. Hats off to them. Seriously.

GOD THIS SUCKS, THE REF COULD HAVE AT LEAST GIVEN US ONE FAVORABLE CALL. HE COULD HAVE GIVEN A BOGUS RED CARD OR SOMETHING EARLY IN THE SECOND HALF SO WE COULD HAVE HAD ONE LESS BARCA DEFENDER TO COUNTER PAST AFTER OUR BAKER’S-DOZEN-IN-THE-BOX CLOSED THEIR EYES AND HOOFED LONG BALLS OUT. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN SO MUCH MORE JUST IF WE WOULD HAVE WON 2-1 AFTER SCORING A MIRACLE SCREAMER ON OUR FIRST HALF-CHANCE OF THE ENTIRE TIE (NOT INCLUDING MARQUEZ’S GIFT TO DROGBA) …..AND THEN ADDING ANOTHER GOAL WITH A FLUKE HANDBALL PENALTY IN THE BOX THAT WOULDN”T HAVE AMOUNTED TO SHITE IF IT WASN’T HANDLED. MAYBE NEXT YEAR BIG ROMAN CAN USE HIS BILLIONS TO BUY THE CLUB A PAIR OF F%CKING TESTICLES. THE ONLY SAVING GRACE I CAN FIND CONSOLATION IN IS KNOWING THAT THE GLORY WE WERE “ROBBED” OF IS F%CKING PLASTIC ANYWAYS.

as a barca fan i admnit chelsea dominated the play that resulted in shots at goal, more “hold my breath” plays, and generally just took thier chances very well. but you guys have such a talented squad, why not come out an attack? every time you guys attacked today i thought you where going to score. i agree with kxevin, the ref sucked, but thats life.

personally i like the idea of this rivarly growing between our two clubs. how many champs leagues have we kicked each other out of now?

hopefully we can meet up next season and go at it again!

I’m an Arsenal fan and i’ve never read a Chelsea blog before but i must admit i’m astounded by your reaction. Let’s put things simply I see enough teams like Blackburn and Bolton come to the grove to recognise masters in defensive football as Chelsea clearly were in the Nou Camp. Then you totally dominated the second leg, you can count Barcelona’s chances over the two legs not so much on one hand but on one finger. Anyone who says Barcelona are better equipped at playing great and attractive football better than Arsenal are deluded because they play against the weakest defences in the world week in week out. Chelsea proved this, and I must say i congratulate you for it. All the same I’m shocked your not far far more pissed off at the referee. I remember when we went out of the champions league to Liverpool in the quarter finals last year with refereeing decisions equally awful, but not quite as frequent, most blogs would put up pictures of the referees from both legs and caption them ‘cunts’. I witness enough missed chances from Ade not to say you’ve got to blame Drogba. Frankly, I’m not into any of this conspiracy shit though, you were well and truly robbed.

    Just a summary:
“When people say it’s all very suspicious then I get rather angry,” roared Guus Hiddink on June 23, 2002.

“Italy and Spain should look at themselves and their shortcomings rather than the referee’s.

“It’s easy to go on blaming referees or linesmen. Of course they make mistakes, but coaches make mistakes, players make mistakes, and the press make mistakes. They go for you and against you.”
