Luka On The Cheap?
By: Jack | February 8th, 2008The Times is reporting that Chelsea are planning a revised bid for Crotia midfielder Luka Modric in the summer. The story says we launched a bid at the end of the January window, but were put off by Dynamo Zagreb’s £20 million evaluation. Much to my enjoyment, the Blues value him at less than half that. The Times also reports that Modric will be able to buy his way out of his contract in 12 months due to the “Webster” ruling. This could lead to Chelsea’s interest being much more attractive to Zagreb — but who knows.
What are people’s thoughts on Modric? From what I’ve seen, I’ve been impressed but haven’t been really struck by his play. It will no doubt be interesting to see where he ends up, with nearly every major club showing interest. Below is a Modric highlight compliation video, enjoy.

This guy looks the real deal, he seems to have everything we need from an attacking winger, pace, skills, lethal finishing, creativity and the use of both feet. Not sure where he would fit in however, it would surely mean that Joey Cole or SWP would have to be dropped from the squad but it would leave the door open for Malouda to exit the Bridge, the guy might have got last years French footballer award but he has not hit form for us as of yet.
As a side issue, we may have enough set-piece takers already but Modric seems to have a brilliant eye for goal from these too and with all of our troubles at winning penalty shoot outs, the kid’s got those in his locker too, get the ten mil out Roman!Posted from

Your comment about set-piece takers is a crucial one. I, for one, do not think we have any real quality corner takers nor do we really have a bonafied free kick taker. I mean Ballack is pretty lethal but it would be nice to have someone who could consistently swing some 35-plus yard balls into dangerous areas.

Good point Jack, we miss so many chances from corner kicks, to have a specialist in place to deliver those kinds of balls would be fantastic.
By the looks of things Modric does not appear to be lethal in the air and to have someone to constantly whip in quality balls from corners for the likes of Ballack, Drogba and Anelka to get on the end of would be very exciting at the Bridge.
Plus that would free up Joe Cole and Lampard to try and get on the end of said corners too.Posted from
