Maradona coming to the Bridge?

By: Jack | June 9th, 2009

Well, not the one you’re thinking — though I’m sure the cigar-puffing serial handballer will be in the box alongside Romes if this rumor comes to fruition.

A surplus of media outlets are reporting that Chelsea have officially lodged a bid for Diego Maradona’s soon-to-be son-in-law, Sergio Aguero. The price for the 21-year-old Atletico Madrid and Argentina striker you ask? Just £45 million.

Whoa.

Still, I kind of like it. Of course that’s much dinero, but this kid is only 21. He already has made 112 La Liga appearances for Atletico and logged 18 senior caps for Argentina. Did I mention he’s 21?

Chelsea target Kun Aguero holds the Blues’ future in his hands. Literally.

His 42 goals in 112 league starts in four years in Madrid is not a total to be overlooked. In fact, compared to Drogba’s run at Chelsea (55 goals in 117 Premier Leaguge run-outs) it’s superb. Did I mention he’s only 21?

The only problem? The kid’s wage demands, apparently.

Take a look at this, according to the Daily Mail: “Aguero, who would smash the British record fee of £34m for Manchester City’s Robinho, is demanding a salary of £6.5m a year after tax, which means Chelsea would have to pay him nearly £11m a season.”

To put that in perspective, that’s more than the £200,000 a week Kaka will earn at Real Madrid. More Dave Chappelle quoting, “Come on, buddy.” I mean, you’re good Kun — but not that good.

Still, we’ve got no clue if Chelsea has actually even submitted a bid. What we do know, however, is that the club has at least made contact about with Atletico regarding the player. Aguero revealed Chelsea’s interest just a few weeks ago.

“It makes me feel proud a team as important as Chelsea notices me,” Aguero told People Sport.

This makes me all warm and fuzzy inside, you know? At least we’re targeting a few worthy prospects for the upcoming season (c. Ribery, Villa); it’s a promising move forward from the likes of Milan’s Grumpier Old Men: Clarence Seedorf and Andrea Pirlo. We’re moving generally in the right direction. Now, all together now … YAY.

Anyway, perhaps those absurd wages include the rights to Aguero’s son, Benjamin. If so, I’m sold. Mommy, Maradona’s daughter, surely wouldn’t object would she?

Diego genes + Aguero genes = mouthwatering.

I’m wary of huge signings after the shevchenko ordeal. not that I don’t like shevchenko – there were flashes of brilliance in his time at chelsea. but ultimately it could have been better spent. I wonder if chelsea might be better of signing two, three, or possibly even four cheaper but promising players instead of one extremely talented and young player for a shit ton of money.

you know the story with those crafty, talented, young players – they show a ton of promise until some defender in the premiership tackles them hard and ends their season. then they never quite make it back to form.
