MotM: Chelsea 1-0 Wigan

Not exactly the boost my fragile state needed ahead of Tuesday.

Together again

Meh.

I’d say that just about sums up Saturday afternoon at the Bridge. It was another labored performance, salvaged somewhat by the industry of Didier Drogba, the return of both Alex and Yossi and Flo’s first goal for two-plus months.

That was it, though, really. Torres’ search for a breakthrough continues, this 30-minute shift certain to be highlighted by his woeful control when played clean through rather than the overall productivity and encouraging link-up with the impressive Benayoun. His confidence must be at an extreme low, regardless.

Sure, the three points are crucial, particularly with Spurs winning as well. I applaud a win no matter how it arrives. But right now, with what we have in front of us, more was expected. Even a return to the traditional 4-3-3 didn’t produce as I thought. Here’s to hoping this incoherent, jagged display sparks a far more impressive outing next week at Old Trafford. No reason that cannot be the case.

Match recap coming tonight. For now, have a vote in the man of the match poll before offering a comment or six below. We’d appreciate it. KTBFFH

  • despite Yossi jumping ship, he's still (secretly) one of my favorite players to watch in the EPL ..
nice to see him back in action.

  • Torres has a great knack for bringing out the best in people around him. Unfortunately, that person has usually been the opposing keeper.

i dont know whats happening in the background but on the pitch theres two main problems: not enough goals -drogba top scorer with 11 goals (i think), and we just cant seem to hold our concentration for 90 minutes.. hard problems for any coach to fix. having said that i dont think ancelloti is leaving this summer. it seems as if the decision makers decided pre season this would be a transition phase and that ancelotti is here long term. maybe theyve changed there mind over the last few months but i think his popularity with fans and press and style of play are just as important to abramovich as winning trophys and a top four finish is enough for him not to get fired. from his point of view he still has one of the most exciting jobs in the game and he's probably willing to put up with all the other crap to coach the players he has under him

Damn, Sturridge is really something eh?

it about sums up Malouda that he scores the winning goal and doesn't get a single MotM vote. has to be gone in the summer. Great performance by Yossi and Drogba more than anyone, although Torres/Luiz/Ramires put in solid shifts as well.

There is some deep problem in the team...maybe something in the background...something in the dressing room...something psychological...cant quite put my finger on it though...

i'm telling you, bro. it definitely came up when Wilkins left. just like you, i don't know what it is, but i know we lost something vital when Ray left

    =(

  • I'm not quite sure what it is. There's a clear aura of finality around the club. Ray's departure, thought a factor, isn't the real catalyst for me. I would reason that the undermining of Carlo in that decision was the real blow. He may have conceded behind closed doors from that point onward. Who really knows.
