MoTM Poll: Chelsea 2 – 1 West Brom

By: Jamie | August 20th, 2011

Not the most inspiring display, but we managed to come from a goal down to beat a stubborn West Brom side. But who was your man of the match?

It was an absolutely dire first half. The second half was better but our inability to finish is still alarming. Fortunately we got the goals we needed to snag the three points.

Hilario had a good game in goal with some excellent saves to make up for our pretty patchy defensive work. Anelka was one of our more forward-thinking players, and credit to him for not stopping play while everyone else was whining about the Lampard penalty appeal – he got a goal out of it. I can’t really think of anyone who glaringly stood out today. A few had shining moments – Bosingwa getting past the two defenders to cross for Malouda’s goal, and Ivanovic’s fantastic ball across to Drogba, who really should have scored, are two which come to my mind.

  • I like to know the two people who voted for Kalou.

In my opinion, Hilario was the best player on the pitch. He saved us in a couple of incidents. Bosnigwa also surprised me, I always beleived in his abilities. I just hope he does not get injured and keep playing. He can be one of the best right-backs in England.

  • AVB has some serious problems to address.  I think he he needs to change his on field line up.  If he is gonna start Torres then stop posting him in the middle at the top of the box.  They need to spread the field and use their speed.  He is not strong enough to hold his own in the middle.  If Drogba is started then surround him with speed (no Anelka) so that he can post in the middle with very wide wingers.  I would put Drogba with Malouda and Kalou.  I would have Torres with Anelka and Kalou.  The man of this match was Hilario.  Without his great saves we lose by 2 goals.  He really saved the defensive back line and AVB.

Lampard is finished and should not play 90 minutes.  Like Drogba, he should be on the bench and brought on if necessary.  Not that bringing on Drogba yesterday exactly changed the game, he did nothing and is too old.  Bosingwa was the best player out of a pretty awful bunch yesterday and this lot will win nothing playing like that, just hope AVB realises that before the transfer window closes.

  • I voted Mikel, despite Bosingwa's spot on delivery to set up Malouda's goal. He's finally settling into that midfield anchor role, reminiscent of Makelele. It seems like every other minute I'd see Mikel breaking up the opposition's attack, pushing opposing midfielders and forwards off the ball, and completing short passes from the back after winning it to set up great movement going forward. That type of play is invaluable, as Makelele demonstrated. Now, if only we had a playmaker Mikel could give the ball to after winning it.

Say what you like about Malouda, as I posted yesterday - the guy at least contributes; and his contribution surely eased some serious pressure off AVB's pubescent managerial shoulders had he not struck that timely goal.  Good work by Bossman also, who clearly feels revived under his fellow countryman's leadership.

Many fans don't want to see our French winger in a blue shirt, I am not one of them.

The guy was French player of the year and our very own players' player of the year two seasons back - I am sure if the fans gave the guy some due respect, bigged him up more often, we will get the flo-mo and not the childish label of slo-mo that we all want to see.

Thanks for your contribution today Florent!!!

Now as a team, let's STEP IT UP!!
