MotM Poll: Chelsea 5-0 Genk

By: Jack | October 19th, 2011

Anyone looking to discuss the fallacies of the Champions League group stage needn’t look any further than Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

One could also look toward Arsenal’s trip to Marseille – a truly wretched match I was forced to freelance – for evidence of the problems with the CL group stage, but that’s a discussion for another blog. Thank God.

Back to Genk’s trip to the Bridge. It appeared on paper prior to kickoff to be a mismatch of mismatches. By far the easiest of fixtures Chelsea would face during this latest Champions League adventure. That is indeed what it was, too, with Fernando Torres and company running riot on a Belgian outfit short on defenders and, perhaps more importantly, confidence.

Yes, Genk were rubbish. But you can only play what’s put in front of you. And we did that with aplomb. Hey, at least Kevin de Bruyne looked a nice prospect.

A full-on match recap is coming later, once we’ve all had time to fully review the wondrous splendor of the result. For now, have a vote in our man of the match poll and leave us a comment or two dozen on what you thought of the result. Surely someone is clamoring to discuss the general world-classness of one Oriol Romeu? I know I am.

Romeu looks like a genuine ball winner out there, loved the kids tackling.

You know when I said I wanted to love Torres, but he hadn't shown enough for me to yet? I love him now.

I do not know why today while I was watching the game, I was remembering all those comments Liverpool fants wrote here about Torres and Meireles lol

  • Mateo

its true that Genk didnt pressure much (at all ) making it easy for a holding midfielder, but Romeu`s lack of charsima is only mached with his stone cold blooded play.

  • Maysam

Now I can see why Barcelona was so insisted to put "Buy Back" cluase in his contract. He was really good, simple passes, not too much touches ...

  • Joshua Sutton

Anyone know the exact details of Romeu's Barca buy back clause?

  • Max

I think Barcelona can buy him back in a year for 10mil pounds, and in 2 years for 15mil pounds. If they don't buy him back, we get a potentially great holding midfielder, and if they do buy him back we make a profit.

  • Mateo

lets frame him for a crime in which we serves 2 years in jail, then when we comes out there will be no buyback clause

  • Well, all we really need to do is convince him to stay if Barcelona do in fact come back in for him. A difficult prospect, but certainly not out of the question.

He has a right to say no? I was under the impression that Barca retained his player rights and he was technically still a Barcelona player. If that is true, that is great news! Although with the inevitable decline of their midfield, I imagine he would fit the bill as a replacement for Busquets...

  • Retained his rights? No, they sold him to us with a buy-back clause. He's our player unless they can agree terms with the player, then we have to allow him to leave for an already set fee over the next two years.

  • Joshua Sutton

Hopefully he likes AVB and will stay. That kid is good, plus we have his countrymen Torres and Mata.  The kid is Spanish right?
