MotM Poll: FC Copenhagen 0-2 Chelsea

By: Jack | February 22nd, 2011

Untracked courtesy of a sometimes impressive, mostly comfortable, 2-0 win in Denmark to open the knockout stages of the Champions League. Nicolas Anelka say fuck penalties.

Manning up.

Better. Not quite there yet, but much, much better.

“It’s been difficult in this run. … Now we have to man up and, as a group of players, take responsibility. It needs to happen now.” -England’s Brave John Terry

It did happen. Nicolas Anelka was listening when the captain spoke prior to today’s match. So was Michael Essien, now complete with snood. Jose Bosingwa? He took note, too.

Everyone did – including Fernando Torres.

It was an encouraging display after such ineptitude in the past couple of weeks. Sure, Copenhagen was far from impressive. In fact, they were disappointing. But, right now, for this team, a win is a win. I don’t give two shits how it arrives.

More in the recap coming tonight. For now, sort out today’s man of the match. Nico?

    likewise :)

Anelka plays 2 great games in the whole season (tonight and a few weeks ago). and now people claim he is our Messiah ?
im not trying totrash him, i love it when he steps up like in this game.... but how often does he play like this?

  • arn00b

There's only so much Anelka can do. He scored in almost every CL game this year and this is the second year where he gets the team out of the group stages almost singlehandedly.

He's a striker. Put him on the wing and he's less good. Put him as a defender and he's even worse. Don't judge him for his performances in other positions to his natural one. It's like putting Ashley Cole as a striker and saying "he's not so good after all, is he?" or Messi as a goalkeeper and saying "best in the world? ha!"

The farther you put Anelka, or any other player, from his natural position, the less quality you get from that performance.

Even a slight shift in position can cause a drop in quality. Imagine Lampard as a holding midfielder, Terry as a right back and Ashley Cole as a centreback. Do you think that's a solid defense?

Anelka always does well when he plays in his natural position. Sometimes it's great, sometimes it's just good. If everyone in the team played "just good" instead of "utter crap" sometimes this season, Chelsea might still be in the title race.

Judge Anelka for what he is - a striker. Don't judge him for what he's not. He's not a winger and don't expect him to be a great winger at this age.

  • Mateo

Judge anelka for he's overall performance throughout the season instead of judging him based upon the post-victory hype of the moment. Same thing with Frank, today he was absolute class...but that hasn't been the case for most of his appearances this season ( even before the injury)
The point is i dont want our game quality to depend on sporadic flashes of talent, we need consistency

  • arn00b

Overall performance throughout the season in which position?

We do need consistency, but if we play players off position, we guarantee a consistency of mediocrity.

It's not just post-victory hype. Anelka missed the penalty against Everton, yes, but he also created the chance that brought the goal. Why is his penalty miss worse than Drogba's against Spurs?

Anelka's getting too much flak for his demeanor irrespective of his performances. He was our top scorer two years ago and he's our current top scorer now. Despite playing on the wing most of the time, having to supply Drogba rather than be supplied, is often subbed out mid-game for Drogba or Kalou, he's got 16 goals. How many has Drogba got? 10. Malouda? 10. Kalou? 9.

It seems to me that he's the strongest link and it's Drogba and Kalou that have to fight for Anelka's spot, not the other way around.

  • Erratic he most certainly is, but you can't deny he was excellent today. We have to take what we can get at this point, man.

  • arn00b

Although I think it's too early to judge Torres, I can't argue with those who prefer Aguero.

Aguero is a player who wanted to come to Chelsea, Torres is someone who just wanted out of the 'pool.

  • TeddyCFC

Does anything ever please you? I mean, what do you want the man to do? Use his hands to throw the balls into net just to justify his hefty price tag?! C'mon man get off the boy's dick and just be supportive!

Torres is doing his best, he shows signs of improved understanding with his new teamates every game he plays for the club.

  • arn00b

I wrote two sentences and you didn't even bother to read them before answering me.

What does the phrase "it's too early to judge Torres" mean to you? It's TOO EARLY. Maybe he'll be great, maybe he'll be a bigger flop than Shevchenko, but it's TOO EFFIN' EARLY to judge him now. I didn't say he flopped or did great. I didn't say anything about him.

I didn't say anything about the price tag, I said his motivation is dissimilar to Aguero's, who, at least publicly, appears to be a Chelsea fan.
To paraphrase Benitez, here's some facts:
Aguero wanted to go to Chelsea.
    Torres wanted out of Liverpool.

    Can you dispute that?
    I can't.

About the "does anything ever please me" part... Yeah, Anelka. I supported him throughout, read the previous posts during the Sunderland game, the rant box on this game, even the penalty miss. I always thought he was a great player and I never doubted him. People said he's old, he's a mercenary, he's finished, he doesn't care enough, but from performances, I see that he does. He just has a different way of showing it.

Torres will be judged, not by this season's performances, nor by the next season, but by his 5 1/2 years in Chelsea.

If you go back and read my earlier posts too, if you want to waste your time, back when Chelsea started declining this season, I defended Ballack and Carvalho, who people said were "finished" and "flop" and condemned fans' using those words.

To many, Nani was born a flop, Berbatov flopped at united, Nasri is too soft, age is everything and Dutch people are made of biscuits... Yet United stuck with their old players, Berbaflop and the cheap version of Ronaldo, and they're top of the table now. Nasri is playing amazingly now and a team of biscuit men made it to the world cup final.

I don't understand why Torres should get any special treatment from the coach or the fans. He shouldn't get any favorable or discriminatory treatment. He wears a blue shirt like everybody else. If he misses 33 sitters in one game, then he should be subbed, just as if Kalou, Malouda, Drogba, Sturridge or Anelka did. If he does well in training, he should play. If he's not 100%, maybe not.

Why are acting like a guy who bought an expensive fur coat and he has to justify the cost by wearing it everyday, to the gym, to work, to weddings, to the beach, to funerals, everywhere... or else it was a waste of money.

Torres should be treated like everybody else. The price tag is for the accounting department. For tactics and game plans, his number is not 50, it's 9, and he's a number and a blue shirt just like everybody else.

  • Max

    Well put.

  • JG

All you have to do is hold the line, and love will make it on time.
Seriously though, congrats on the win today- you needed the confidence booster on such an important match to (maybe) get back on winning ways. Good luck.

  • Everyone needs to relax and give Nando a chance to blend in. He looked bright and incisive today, minus his shooting. Created good chances, ran well with the rock, passed effectively. The goals will flow once he gets an understanding with the rest of the lads. Didier needs to understand that if he wants to play, he's got to step it up, sharpish.

  • lamps

Nando is crap he had his best days 4 liverpool he is a woman in disguise and not worth 50 mil, if he was fergie would have got him

  • Jeez, I don't like Torres much, but I'm more than willing to give him a chance at Chelsea and hope that he starts to hit his stride soon. He's a Blue now, I want him to do well.

  • What are you on about?

  • Seriously?

  • TeddyCFC

Nico + Nando = Partnership made in heaven!

I just hope DD understands his place in the squad is in jeopardy if he doesn't learn how to link up with either strikers.

  • cfc

Come on torres is sh*te a waste of £50m could have got aguerro for that he is a liverpool player and always will be. Just like shevchenko was ac milan through and through.

  • zach

    you're a moron, cfc..

  • cfc

Maybe but doesnt hide the fact that torres has got scouse blood in him now, he wont do for us what he done for them. It is like lampard or terry going to liverpool ( u no what i mean)

  • Pfelds

do not use "us" in refference to anything allying our fanship to your PMS or anti-semitism directed in odd directions. i take it your a 'poo fan using a cleverly disguised tag of "cfc". and all this about scouse blood, i really disagree he has any different blood than the blood he was born with, unless the liverpool metropolitan area is the site of some sort of "I Am Legend" type experiment or host to an unknown nuclear or chemical spill akin to Chernobyl or Three Mile Island........ in short, "cfc" please do the world a favor and go gouge your eyes out
