“This guy I know. He’s radical. I wouldn’t f*** with him.” – Charlie Sheen

So off we went to the Seaside, and away we go with three points after a night of unimpressive football. Lacking was the continuity and crisp attacking display from Tuesday’s second half – in its place a sloppily administered 4-4-2 that the players have yet to grasp. But results, at this stage of the season, are vital and if we stand a prayer of catching the fellas up north, we have to put a premium on points.

I’m not advocating that we, by any means, don’t have a lot of work ahead of us. If we’re planning a late-season surge for the top, we genuinely have to play better than last night in Blackpool. It was at times stuck-in, and at others full of attacking movements. True to the script of the last three months, we waltzed in and out of frame for extended stretches and gave the Seasiders a plethora of late chances to steal a point. If we stand any hope of advancing in the CL, it’s apparent that Carlo and the rest of the staff have their work cut out to integrate Nando and find a rhythm that works on a consistent basis.

I’m keeping this one brief for now.

What You Need to Know:

We won. It was unconvincing, but certainly satisfying.

Our attackers are severely lacking in continuity and understanding. This, needs to be sorted. ASAP.

Defensively, our focus was poor. This, needs to be sorted. ASAP.

We’re alive in the League for another week.

Player Ratings:

(We’re going out of 10 for a scale)

GK – Cech – 7.5 – A couple of fine saves in the both halves, particularly, merit note. He was inch perfect throughout, save for Puncheon’s finish towards the final whistle. Pete’s on his grind, son.

RB – Bosingwa – 6 – Should probably give him a lower score on aggregate, but he almost nicked a goal with a nice curler. Otherwise, skinned early and often during the proceedings. Not sure if the knees will ever get to full-strength long term. He’s still retained his quickness, but his overall speed and marking abilities look somewhat diminished.

CB – EBJT – 7.5 – Resolute. Opened the scoresheet with a 1st half header, and provided sturdy cover throughout. We’ve now tallied 8 goals from our collective defensive unit. Good work on set pieces once again led to JT finding himself completely unmarked. Defensively, handled his tasks with comfort. I particularly enjoyed his sneering and mean-muggin’ in the second half.

CB – David Luiz – 6.5 – An emotional letdown from the United game for the Brazilian, methinks. There was almost no way he could have measured in stature to the heights he reached last week, so it might be a tad unfair to judge him as such. Still, as much as I love Bob, I think we can all agree he has some work to do to round out his defensive skills. Showed some good awareness to block and intercept passes, but needs to sharpen his instincts on determining what to do when bombing forward.

LB – Ash - 6.5 – Usual fair from Mr. Cole. Nothing of major concern, got up and down the pitch, intercepted play and created opportunities on the left side of the park. Of concern, in my opinion, has been his inconsistent crossing into the box. It seems he had little trouble last year with this – perhaps the formation adjustments are messing with his head.

RM – Ramires – 5.5 – Not a good game for Go-Go-Gadget Brazilian. A spectator in the first 45, and incapable of stamping his presence on the proceedings. I’m giving him a pass this time, but he has to do better next week against Copenhagen.

CM – The Bison – 6.5 – I think I saw some flashes of improvement from Mike, but then again I can’t be certain. I’m slightly blinded by my love for him, that I may well be tricking my brain into thinking he’s doing better than he actually is. Help me..

CM – Franklin - 7.5 – Franklin Comes Alive! His first goal from open play since August, but I really wanted him to cross that to a wide open Nando T for his first CFC goal. Sigh. Clinical once again with his second penalty in as many games. I mentioned in an earlier post that he was slowly finding his mid-season fitness and rhythm. Seems I may have been right with this one, but clearly wrong with the next player evaluation…….

LM – Yuri-dinho – 4.5 – Of everyone on the pitch before the opening kick, he was the one player I LEAST expected to no-show. His first start in over three months, coming off a strong cameo appearance against United, I thought our Russian import would be fired up and attempt to stake claim to a starting berth. Shit, was I wrong. Couldn’t decide what to do when on the ball, made poor decisions, and struggled to keep up to terms with the pace of the match. Rightfully substituted for a much more effective Flo in the second half.

ST – Nando – 5.5 – I’m not panicking, nor worrying. I’m just hoping we can find a combination of midfielders before Tuesday that can manage to get Nando some legit service when he’s unmarked for stretches and acres of space. Until then, I can’t blame the guy for failing to score.

ST – Le Drog – 5 – Not a good day for Didier. I’ll leave it at that.

Subs:

ST – Sala K - 8 MOTM – Brilliant impact. Earned the penalty and created the third goal, and almost added a fourth before the final whistle. Bright, lively, and creative in attack over 35 minutes. I think he’s earned a chance to acquit himself next week, but no one would want to guess Carlo’s plans before then. My pick for Man of the Match, though I’d be wise to give it to John as well.

LM – Florent - 7 – The advice from the coaches was simple: run at them – and Flo delivered. Used his limited minutes to provide a needed threat off the left side, and did well to threaten the net. More, please.

CM – Joshy - 6 – His composure on the ball is a thing of beauty. Never looks out of control, and seems to have a knack for executing smart forward passes.

I asked this question a week back or so. Do you guys think Kalou deserves to start over lazy drogs?

  • For me, no. I've always seen Kalou, with his skill set, as an impact sub. He's perfect in that role considering his pace and ability to run at defenders.

  • Dr. Dro 11

Another great article doc. I agree that Kalou had the most impact, but overall dominance throughout the 90 has to go to JT. If it were not for him, Sideshow could've leaked the accidental penalty and we would not have been as poised as we were for most of the game. How many times did we see JT yelling at the midfield and back-line and how many headers did he win off of crosses? He got a goal as well, so in my opinion, MOTM has to be JT. One could argue that Lampsy deserves it for bagging 2 goals, but he still does not look like the Frankie of old, I believe his injury has made it difficult for him. I think "the one who cannot be seen" was the perfect sub and he would not have put a foot wrong in his cameo had he scored at the death. Had he scored, well MOTM it is... On another note, one thing that we know about Blackpool is that they keep coming at you. Do they concede, yeah, more than most, but nobody can argue with their work rate and vision. I find them to be a team that has some of the better vision in the bottom half of the table. At the end of the day, I'll take the points and I enjoyed the article doc, and Charlie is damn right, dont **** with the skip!

  • Dr. Dro is alive and commenting! This has me very very excited for the future!

  • Timlos

Look the truth is Torres is in for a hard time so he better brace himself up for that cos every player (defender) will be out to try and prove something against the most expensive player in the league, at least until he breaks the duck. See the way a defender or two are all over him the moment the ball comes his way. It really appears to me like his team mates are not out to help him either or is it just me seeing things. Like you rightly observed, Lampard should have squared to him for the 3rd goal. May I suggest that he takes the next penalty kick that comes our way if he has not scored by then, although that will be a gamble if he loses it. He needs to be psyched up too, he tends not to look the part at times or if he needs to be hypnotised into believing he's playing against Chelsea all the time at least he seemed to have the knack for scoring against us then.

  • don

Jack, did you manage to ban king kenny at the end or has he gone to a dark corner to die.

  • I banned one of the IPs he was using - the main one. I'm sure he'll be back, so, you know, brace yourself for some more entertainment.

  • French Rover

Would be more impressive if you could get the name of the team you were playing correct! But you did us (Blackburn) a big favour by beating Blackpool but you could have scored a few more goals..

Still we will be taking at least one point off you at the Bridge soon! :-)

  • Ha, sorry folks. It's late out here and I need sleep..

  • Joe

Not bad for a team playing with 10 men ( Torres without service from Gerrard is nowhere).......
    Bring back Sturridge

  • pla

Kalou? Are You kidding me? Okay, he got the soft penalty, but that's it. Plenty of poor first touch, bad decisions and classical Kalou-i'll-do-the-hardest-part-and-then-i'll-screw-it-big-time. Worst player in our team, incredibly frustrating to watch him.

And damn, they could start passing the ball to Torres, how is supposed to score without any service at all? This sucks.

  • frederic

    You must be kidding...
Kalou might be frustrating all you want, but his style of play just gives chelsea another dimension... We all felt like passing the ball to Fernando to score his first goal, but then again, I would say, give him a break. Let's stop harrassing the guy just like the press does... The "50 million man" everyone loves to hate does not need to score, as long as others are doing so... He must realise that this is Chelsea, our goals come from everywhere, not just the strikers... The coach is trying hard to include him in a formation that will work, not just for him, but everyone on the pitch. What's the media all about? we're winning our games without his goals. so what? It's Roman's millions, he can choose to use them as he pleases. So, can the media stop acting as if he borrowed the money from them, and they expect a return on their investment?

  • Disagree with your opinion on Kalou in this match, but overall I agree. He's wildly inconsistent. But on this night he was a lone bright spot.

  • He did more than just win a penalty, bro. Our entire style changed once he came on. We were desperate for pace and direct play; he provided both. At least that's what I saw.

  • pla

Allright, our style changed, great, but what did Kalou exactly do? Can You point out to me one good pass he made, one play, that was in any way dangerous? I don't need a precise minute, i'll take Your word for it - it's just i can't think of anything really. All i remmeber is a string of wasted chances, passes that weren't made and myself shouting "Kalouuuuu" to the sky.

With him on the pitch we change the style, and that's good. My point is - with a better player, we could make MUCH more from it.

  • Well, he was the fulcrum for the third goal. He played a neat 1-2 with Essien at midfield, turned well against two defenders, then played an excellent through ball for Lampard. It was a microcosm of everything Kalou can do for us. Of course, then there was the missed sitter. But this is Kalou we're talking about.

  • don

Kalou is a great impact sub, but if he plays from start doesnt deliver same perfomances consistently.
