Poll: Should Joe Cole get a new contract?

By: Jack | February 15th, 2010

I know I’m not the only one thinking it. Joe Cole has hardly been Joe Cole this season. In fact, when was the last time we saw the vintage Joey — 2008?

He actually opened the 2008-09 season fairly well, if I remember; I believe he netted three goals before doomsday — the FA Cup tie against Southend which resulted in a season-ending knee injury. Since returning from injury, Cole has made 25 appearances (16 starts, 9 subs). He has hardly been impressive.

This is in the final year of his current contract. This for a man seeking a deal reportedly worth six figures per week. Not good enough; not good enough at all.

Maybe you, like me, gave Joey a longer leash. You know, having seen how Michael Essien returned from an extended layoff. Impressive early in his return (c. Liverpool CL tie), form waned a tad later in the season, then back to his dynamic best before the ACON injury. Cole was impressive early this term, but now appears simply inadequate — and I’m afraid we might not see a renaissance.

Perhaps the real question should be: Is he really fit? If not, then the question is: Will he ever be? And thus, do we hand him a new contract? Let me know people.

  • I would certainly want him to stay too. It's just about one season.I'm sure that he'll come around after all.For more on football blogging i would recommend http://footballrumblings.com

sir david wasnt 'shit' yesterday. he didnt give up the ball, defended well and put in a few good crosses. i realise he played easier passes rather than defence breaking through balls but he was far from shit..

Beckham aint 33 he is 35 and don't believe the bullshit they said about becks having a gr8 match yesterday he was shit and so was favalli, dida, hunterlaar and even the gr8 nesta and silva. J.cole needs to step up and no way he deserves 120K he should get 90K max

  • Ph0bolus

Kakuta has half of his talent...like most of us said he's good, but not good enough for the amount of money that he asking for.

  • mohamed

back uuuuppppppppp ppl.i dont know how old u ppl are but in my book cole is blues for life.he can play in any team in the world and be a starter.if becham is playing while 33 years old, joe can play until 40.just because someones form diped a bit doesnt mean we should toss them out.if that was the case why not terminate cechs contract.joe is a class winger/creative mid/trequartista/striker.tell me anyone in our club half his talent.ya'lll should be tosed out cause ur fake bleus supporters.i am oooouuuuuuuuttttttttttttttta here.

  • Robby Ecnd

I want him to stay but he just isn't worth the contract that he wants

We don't need him THAT MUCH

  • Kostaz

His last 3-4 matches were bad,but before that he played well, some expect him to perform like Messi I don't.I believe he has a lot more to give and it would be unwise to let him go.

  • mattsmash

hmmmm, tough decision but get rid. he's too old now, his time was around 4 years ago, now he's crap. he's 28 we need young quick wingers not another ageing superstar.

  • ph0bolus

If we do sign him it should be for the same pay he's been getting. We've been cleared of the transfer ban debacle so now he really has no reason to be asking for more money. He should be happy he's getting paid as much as he is. I'd hate for him to go, because I have a feeling that if he does move to a different club he'll return to his old self again.

  • david

    Nah.

Peak of his career ruined by injuries, unsure managers, playing in the wrong position & stern competition for both club/country. He had/has the talent to have really torn up the league, and even cause havoc on the international scene. The fact this topic was even created says enough, his career would've been better servedspending more time at West Ham, or moving to a Tottenham/Villa rather than Chelsea.

He should've been on Rooneys level, he'll retire less remembered than McManaman.

  • Better keep him.I think he will improve. Why i think he is under-performing now is because he is so anxious to impress;he is so desperate to perform creditably thats the reason for him not playing well.To be fair enough,it was only in our last match that he was awful. He has been good in our previous matches. Please don't judge him with that.He moves the ball quickly,he is so agile.Remember how we played with fluidity while Drogba was on duty with his country. Please don't forget that in a haste."One doesn't know what he or she has until he or she loses it".I rest my case.
