Poll: Who’s next for the poisoned chalice?

By: Jack | May 22nd, 2011

Who’s bat-shit crazy enough to assume this nearly untenable position?

Charmer

King Carlo is no more. Sacked mere seconds after his post-match presser at Goodison via a face-to-face with the bean counter, Ancelotti now finds himself free to pursue various avenues, including a potential job in the Italian capital. All this while being a whole hell of a lot richer. Not a bad day after all, I reckon.

Sacked in the atrium outside the media center at Everton? Fuck right off. I won’t dive that deep into my anger, as Devin has already gone to lengths to express the repulsive nature of this move by the club, but I will say that I’m embarrassed. Greatly.

Carlo Ancelotti may not have been the right man to lead Chelsea forward. This is up to interpretation. But to treat him in such a manner, with such disdain, is, quite frankly, disgusting. I can’t imagine how he felt in that hallway. Inexcusable.

Regardless, we must move on. And to do so means appointing a new stopgap. Yes, I write that in the most sarcastic tone I can muster.

this season’s performances have fallen short of expectations and the club feels the time is right to make this change ahead of next season’s preparations

The above, from the official statement on Carlo’s departure, is hilarious. Any qualified manager with half a braincell would be mad to say yes to Roman on the evidence. What do you get, a couple of seasons tops before losing your luster and picking up a hefty compensation package? Compensation … Where do I sign up?

Who wants it then? The world is rampant with speculation on who will or won’t take the position, the Van Basten/Hiddink ticket spending the evening blowing up Twitter. Andres Villas-Boas is the next Jose Mourinho if you ask Mourinho fans. He’s not if you ask Boas himself. He could be the next Chelsea manager, though.

There are any number of candidates out there and, using the Scolari appointment as evidence, you never really know what to expect with Chelsea Football Club. You simply can’t count out anyone, not even Joe Cole. Well, maybe you can.

So let us know what you think. Vote, then have a say in the comments. I fancy a good debate on this.

i would be absolutely devastated if rafa took over the chels..

  • To be honest, I had to google Villas-Boas.

    Holy mother of god.

It's like the best of all worlds combined. He's worked under arguably two of the greatest managers ever, speaks English with a Portuguese accent, looks kinda like Mourinho, came from Porto, just won a UEFA cup (though not quite the same as a CL), just won a treble, does not have any white hair, is charming, and is still a COMPLETE gamble.

Wait, what the fuck. We are not signing Mourinho?

Seriously, this club is haunted by the man. Fuckfuckfuckityfuck.

  • By the way, the guy looks exactly like Colin Firth. Like in Love Actually (I'm sorry), when he plays a cutesy-charming writer who walks into Portugal, and accidentally comes back with a Euro C coaching license, I mean, Portuguese babe.

I am absolutely bubbling at how awkward it's going to be when Mourinho and Villas-Boas come face to face in the 2012 Champions League final in the tunnel.

Jose - "Hello, I am Jose Mou..."
    Andre - "It's like I am..."
Jose - "...looking in a mirror"

Intense make out scene from Love Actually, where Colin Firth is dripping wet. Somehow Jose will be wet too.

Chelsea has fucked me in the head.

  • bit of a shortfall in points this year but i find it hard to believe that finishing 2nd after winning a domestic double last year is enough to get you the sack...
crazy times in this ol' football game.

  • Dd2090x2

i dont think the Chelsea managerial position is one that no one would take, in fact i feel quite the opposite is true. An opportunity to manage one of the best teams in the premier league and possibly the world, with a big transfer budget every season. sure with this comes a higher level of expectations and this is acceptable. but even for those who don't cut it they still leave with a huge compensation package. It really seems like a win-win situation.

  • Mateo

Roman himself, as he clearly wont let any manager do his job...

but i would like Pep of Van Gal

  • Gary

I did not want Carlo to go, but I’m relieved he’s
gone. I think many feel the same. He was a nice guy, but an average leader. We
say he won the double last season, but I think the team did. I think Carlo was simply
handed the Premierships best team. But this season that team hit hard times,
and Carlo was unable to lift it. Yet one feels that a Ferguson or a Mourinho
would have. But here we are talking about the world’s best coaches; is that
fair? Well, I think it’s what Abramovich wants. And so I think Roman must be
careful who he chooses. He must go for someone who is world class. I don’t
think we can say this about Van Basten, Zola, or Rijkaard.

  • Ray

Totally agree.People talk about the double but often forget the poor runs in CL in both years.

  • Gary

We complain that Chelsea have had 7 managers in 8
years but forget that Chelsea is in a different position to most teams. Chelsea
can afford to buy and pay off managers while other teams can’t. If other teams
don’t have a genius like Ferguson, they have to settle for less or hope their average
manager improves. Abramovich is not looking for someone average, he is after
the best. His first choice, Mourinho, was the best, but a conflict arose. Since
then he has been shopping. When he finds his genius, things will settle.

  • arn00b

Yeah, he can go around shopping, but if this is his policy, it's better to have shorter contracts.  Of the 4 available options, why does he opt for the worst? -

    1. Long contract, long-term appointment
    2. Short-contract, short-appointment
    3. Short-contract, constantly renewed
    4. Long-contracts, constantly terminated.

  • Mateo

    lol "constantly terminated"

  • Sportsgrandparents1

to the owner of chelsea - all money and no brains

  • Ray

No brains??He owns 11 billion $$ starting from zilch. How much did you make??

  • arn00b

I voted for Moyes.  He knows Chelsea inside and out, is a tactical mastermind, knows how to play with 10 men (which is getting to be an important factor in the modern game, especially in Europe) won manager of the month and year many times, keeps stability despite chaos at the club, already manages a blue team...

  • guest

I heard that Roy Hodgson will be in the frame. Apparently Abramovich wants an English coach! Would be a great appointment for Chelsea!

  • I've loved Woy forever, and he did not get enough time at Liverpool. Likewise, I don't think he'll get any more patience at Chelsea than he did there, he's a pet-project guy not immediate impact.

  • Guest

Look what he done to Liverpool.
He can only work with little mid-table clubs.

  • Magic-freddy

Emenalo and Clement should be fine... No stress. Well done Gourlay. You just saved Roman a lot of money. From all Chelsea fans, thank you... And as suggested could you bring back Joe Cole? please, he did not like it at liverpool, and now that carlo is gone, i'm sure he will not struggle to be in the starting eleven.
So my vote, Emenalo as Coach, and Clement as his assistant. The future looks bright indeed. Can't wait for next year...

  • Charlie

i think martin o'neil should be gien the helm at sw6 :)

the reason being is that he built aston villa up slowly until his fully justified walking away from a club that sold there best players, i dont think he would have that problem at chelsea...

also hes not at the age of our 4 previous managers....carlo, guss, scolari and avram so if he were to be a success then he could even go on to become the next long reining manager like fergason or wenger.

why go for a big name thats just gunna get sacked when he doesnt deliver every game?

aston villa played good football under o'neil and also had a good mix with the youth set up he had.

bring in a manager who is young enouth to last a long time and is old enough for the players to respect. MARTIN O'NEIL FITS THE BILL!!!!

  • Battboy123

Good call Charlie,,,,like,s to play attacking/football,,,buy,s and will use good/young/player,s,,,good tactician,,experienced,,,,only one/prob,,,,he will not put up with Roman,s interfering with team/tactic,s/selection,,,,very opinionated/clever,,manager,,could Roman cope with O,Neil,,,I suspect niether Roman or his boot/lickers could cope with someone like Martin O,Neil,,,bite the bullit Roman,,,get O,NEIL
