Poll: Will Ancelotti survive to the weekend?

By: Jamie | April 12th, 2011

We lost, we looked pretty rubbish as is customary these days, and so the media and football fans will be speculating about the gaffer’s future. Yet another season passes without Roman getting his paws on the Champions League trophy – but will he immediately act on this loss and get rid of the eyebrow?

So here’s your chance to vote and express your opinion. Do you think Carlo will get the sack? Who would Roman even have lined up to replace him at this point? Or should we keep faith with Ancelotti, who did win us the double after all? What do you think needs to happen to turn things around at the club?

let me first admit that i'm not a chelsea fan but as a neutral i can't believe that all the chelsea fans are blaming carlo and even roman abramovic!!!
    1) its because of roman that you guys can even dream about winning te trophies, had he not spent millions on the team chelsea still would've been a mid table side.sure now everyone says roman should have bought a playmaker instead of torres but back in jan when torres arrived everyone was rejoicing, nobody said at that time chelsea shouldn't have signed him,its only because he's not doing well now everyone is a visionary saying this was a wrong buy!!!!
    2) rewind to last may when chelsea won the double all of you guys were making him a hero, now just because of a poor season he becomes a villain?also is it carlo's fault that ray wilkins was sacked all of a sudden or that all the big guns at chelsea are in their 30's and are not getting better?there are only a few ryan giggs' who do that...
sure a major rebuilding is needed but do not blame the manager who just won you a double or the owner who has spent more money on the club than any other owner in the world...

I was against Torres from day one. I never liked him, never liked his style, his slyness, his "whatever it takes" attitude, etc. etc. The Al-Habsi incident was not an isolated incident, but is one of many. That goal against Sunderland (with Kuyt) is one of the lowest moments and lowest things I've ever seen a footballer do. It's worse than the Barca play acting, Pinto whistling, the handballs, the Henry handball, the Porto-Arsenal quick free-kick... but not that Nani bs against Spurs... that was worse.

It's worse than the Suarez handball. The Suarez handball was punished and other team had the chance to rectify the error, Torres' "steal" was rewarded. But whereas Suarez did it for his country in the world cup in the face of certain elimination (still not excusable) Torres did it for a cheap goal against Sunderland for a team he absolutely adores, but can't wait to get out of asap, because the boardroom stress is totally crampin' his style there's not enough Spaniards and shi'. Cheap goal from a cheap man.

Now they're saying that we should get Benitez for Torres to score. Yeah? Why don't we get some loyal footballers and beautiful personalities like Ri£ra and Fabregas to join us so that he can score. How about Almunia? Can't be that expensive. Why don't we airlift a Spanish city and put it next to King's Road so that he can feel better. Now if Ancelotti leaves, is that more "instability" in the club that will prevent him from playing well for the future?

Ancelotti is a hero in our minds and hearts. He's not a villain and no one hates him. He's a man with a great plan A, but no plan B. Plan A won the double, plan B won nothing. Everyone knows his plan A now. Carlo has won 1 CL knockout game since he came to Chelsea, against the weakest side left in the competition.

The players are underperforming, yet he keeps playing them. Roman made him play Torres, he denies that... but who made him play Ferreira? Who made him play Essien? Who made him play Lampard? Now it's time for a major overhaul, everyone says. But Scolari said the same thing. He absolutely needed to get rid of Drogba, Ballack, etc. (the good ones) and replace them with Deco, Robinho, Adriano, Quaresma, Paim, Bosingwa, Mineiro...

    So major overhaul time?

  • Why does everyone just assume that we were some average side lurking in mediocrity before Roman arrived? It's ignorant and, quite frankly, insulting.

  • Because we ain't got no history, Jack, get with the program. :P

  • Max

I don't think it's us blaming the manager. I want Carlo to stay. A bunch of other people do too. The choice is all Romans though. I think Carlo should have another year and backing in the transfer market, and then we can decide on a course of action after next season.

Second, we would not be a mid-table club. If you look at the year before Roman bought us, we made it to the CL. If you look a little further back, you will see that we were progressively getting better and better. So no, we wouldn't be a mid-table club if Roman hadn't bought us.

  • I like him and had loads of fun last season, but this season i was just confused with some of his decision making or lack there of. I wish him all the best but perhaps he wasn't suited to english football (last season was not a masterclass after all), he should definitely get to the end of the season though.

Out: Ancelotti, Kalou, Malouda, Torres (only for a decent price though, otherwise he gets a second chance), Bosingwa.

In: Hiddink, competition for lampard and essien, young striker to partner drogba and sturridge up front (hopefully quick), a right back. And i guess lukaku? i don't think he's what we need right now but as an investment we could totally regret missing out on him.

  • Of course the answer is no, but I'm torn as to what happens moving forward. I've also yet to even contemplate a recap of last night's match, mainly because it feels like the end of an era. Leaves me feeling nauseous.

  • I'm rarely for sacking managers after very short periods, especially just because they failed to win any trophies in a given season. First, a reminder that Carlo lead this team to a double last year. That's two more trophies than Wenger has won in the past six years. Bringing back Guus isn't guaranteed to solve anything. Remember, Guus failed to get Russia to the last World Cup. Guus was here for a short time and was successful. Scolari and Carlo were successful for short times too. No one has been able to have long term success here since Jose because no one has been here long term since Jose. Sir Alex doesn't win the EPL or CL every year. But they don't fire him because he is quality manager. At some point, you have to give a quality manager some leeway

  • Adyatama

I seriously think that Carlo needs a better assitant ... none of the current are respectable ex-chelsea ... I mean these people are just non-premier league footballers. I propose for Zola or Di Matteo for Assistant!! Seriously, I do believe dat Carletto is a good tactician with lame passion... Chelsea just need some more of the spark for more passion! Ray Wilkins was tha man that motivates (and that was just barely I prefer scummy Steve Clarke thou) ... Seriously Carlo brought double cups in a season! remember dat! *I'm expecting some dislikes but I just need to voice my opinion is all

Change the philosophy of the club that has been based on buying new, more or less expensive players from other clubs.
Invest in the youth system, show patience with potential new superstars, stick to a coach even if it takes some years until its work pays off.

I don't think Chelsea will improve on the long-term if they just buy more and more new players and change the coach every single or two seasons.

  • Emekainc

CHELSEA fans seem to overlook the importance of player in the squad.
    john mikel obi .

last season, essien was injured most of the campaign.
    there was no ramires.

mikel was left to do the dirty job- chelsea won the double.

essien's back, ramires in - mikel benched, chelsea would end up trophyless.

  • arn00b

Mikel played in the loss to spurs last year, the loss to Hodgson's pool, loss to Dalglish, both Inter games, the 3-1 loss to Arsenal, draw against Spurs this year, loss to city, cup loss to Everton...

Not exactly his fault, but not free from blame either. He was beaten by Bellamy and

You don't need a foul magnet either. Mikel is a player who can get a yellow card seconds after kick off. Imagine what Nani would do with that.

His touch is poor, he makes a lot of interceptions, which looks great statistically, but most of these interceptions fall back to the other team's players again. Remember the 4-2 against City. Mikel's shit header was an assist to Tevez. He got skinned by Bellamy leading to the goal. Then he was outpaced by Gareth Barry of all people.

He's not a bad player. He's an average holding midfielder. He won't win you the game, but he might cost you the game. He used to collect red cards, now he collects yellows before being subbed off for anyone else.

The reason for Chelsea's woes is not that Mikel isn't playing, it's that there midfield is incredibly poor. Lampard and Essien haven't been 60% of their former selves. Ramires is inconsistent. There's no playmaker in the team. The strikers have to create chances out of nothing, like Drogba. Torres will flop without a playmaker and he's showing it every day. They should've gotten VDV, or Suarez, someone who feeds chances to the strikers. Suarez, for example, is so good, that he made someone like Kuyt score a hattrick against United in 90 minutes. Chelsea mustered 1 goal in 3 hours.

Why did we get a striker without a playmaker? It's because the person who made the decision to get Torres knows little about football and thinks that to score goals, you need a striker and nothing more. No need for a playmaker. Well, good luck then.

  • I thought this was a joke! Really you all want him gone? After a transition season where we got rid of 5 senior players in the summer? And after he won Chelsea's first ever double just last year? The funny thing is if we have a strong run at the end of the season then everyone will want Carlo to stay!

Just because the media need to find a scapegoat doesn't mean we need to as well.

  • arn00b

It's for his own good. If he doesn't have the courage to stand up to Abramovich or make his own team selections without "pressure," then he shouldn't be there.

Everyone is saying that he was pressured into playing Torres. Ancelotti denies it. But why did Torres start? Is it because of his scintillating form in the last few games? Because he couldn't score in 600 minutes of football, he's going to do it at OT, down 1 in the Champions League? Really?

If it's really his decision, then it's a very stupid decision. It means that players are being picked by rank, not be form. What Ancelotti has shown by this decision is that it doesn't matter how hard the kids try, Sturridge, Josh, PVA, Borini, etc. you will be outranked by someone because of their name. Torres is a big name, so he has to play, irrespective of performance or result.

Ancelotti basically sent out a message to all the kids saying that a 10% in form Torres, a Portuguese translator and Lampard on a wheelchair are all more likely to get into the starting XI than any of the younger players.

And if it's not his decision, then he should leave to a club where he makes his own decisions and Chelsea should get someone who makes his own decisions despite the pressure.

    The week end -yes
the season im not to sure.

We need a couple of world class play maker. Simple

  • Timlos

Ancelloti kind of reminds me of Hodgson at Liverpool. He is simply out of hie depth. Can anyone honestly tell me that a Gus or Jose will not do better with the same set of players we have right now. What does he even do with them in training, can you mention any of our players who has improved under him, does he even know them as to understand their strenght and weakness and play them to their strenght. I really think it is an Italian League thing, they just don't measure up. Check his alter ego in Mancity, with all the money and players what do they have and these two were at Inter and Milan, two of the "best" in Italy. And looking at the league right now, what Tottenham did to both Inter and Milan says a lot about their standing right now and didn't they recently lose one of their Champions League slots. Ancelloti is not good enough, the cups won last season was just a fluke and we were rightly decieved. Check our European ranking it has been in decline since this guy took over, may I ask what has really ascended since he came? And he dared to ask for renewal of contract, obviously attempting to position himself for bigger pay-off when he is sacked as he knows he will be.

  • Rossonero

For you to say something like that is just stupid. Ancelotti is nowhere near out of his depth. He already won a champions league, got to a few finals. Did mourinho win with chelsea? No, he had relatively the same team, probably a better one. Did Hiddink win with chelsea? No. Mourinho made the base of this team, and it hasnt been changed majorly. You can't say last year was a hoax, Chelsea lost to Inter in the CL who was clearly a better team, and Italian as you say arent good. Next time you say something make sure you have some knowledge on the subjectm so you dont look like a jackass.

  • Caleb

Ancelotti out of his depth? I will agree that results suck but come on. Do yourself a favor and use the google machine. Ancelotti had more CL experience than anybody involved with Chelsea. Did he pick the wrong striker? Sure. Is he out of his depth? You're having a laugh.

  • arn00b

I feel the same way too. No player has significantly improved since he joined Chelsea.

Drogba's best year was last year and now it's all been undone by malaria, the team being crap and playing second fiddle to a currently rubbish striker. Malouda played great last year, this year, not. Ashley Cole is not as good, not to a drop in form or health, but due to the system.

The team is in worse shape now than when Carlo took over after Guus.

One thing I think about often. Mourinho made Chelsea fans into fans of Porto, Inter and Madrid. Porto fans support Chelsea, Inter, Madrid... and so on...

Can we say that about Ancelotti? Would we even check Roma's news next season if he were to leave this week? Would any of our players want to move to Roma to play under him? Do any of Milan's players want to come to Chelsea to play under him?

That's one thing Ancelotti severely lacks. He's more like a technical director than a coach. No connection to the players, no hairdryer treatments, no high-fives, no hugs... Even Gene Hackman was hugged by the whole team at the game against Stoke. Yeah, you know which one.

    Tell me that I'm wrong.

  • Sjlblues

I agree with everything you have said. I really don't understand all these people sticking up for him. Yes he's a nice guy but he is simply not good enough. There has been no improvement, just decline and that started long before Torres came in. I don't get any sense of passion in the team either. Are they playing for this manager or not. He doesn't seem to motivate them in any shape or form! I thought the FA Cup was our only realistic trophy this year and we blew that one too, loosing at home yet again. What has happend to Stamford Bridge the fortress? I hate to say this but I loved the way Liverpool played this week against that other Italian and off course they did the double over us this season. What is it with these Italian coaches and not moving the ball around at pace! Both Chelsea and Mancity are so ponderous and pedantic in their play. You are right though, who is capable of managing this team? Not sure. There needs to be another clear out this summer and some re-building both on and off the pitch. Lets hope we can look forward to a better season next year.

  • KINGKENNY

I FEEL SORRY FOR YOU GUYS AND CARLO BUT YOU DESERVE TO BE KICKED OUT, YOUR CLUB IS A SHAMBLES BUILT ON FOUNDATIONS OF MONEY. THE PRESIDENT INVOLVING HIMSELF IN TEAM AFFAIRS, FIRING THE BEST MANAGER JOSE BECAUSE HE STOOD AGAINST HIM AND BEING ARROGANT ENOUGH TO REPLACE HIM WITH A HAPLESS UNKNOWN GRANT, SAME HAPPENED TO RAY WILKINS. CARLO IS A PUSSYCAT ALLOWING HIMSELF TO BE BULLIED BY ROMAN AND LOSING ALL CREDIBILITY AND RESPECT AND ALLOWING RAY TO GO AND TORRES UPON HIMSELF. CARLO NEEDS TO BE A MAN AND DO THE RIGHT THING RATHER THAN ACT LIKE A PUPPET.

  • Tom

    you no a cliff.
you may want to jump off one.

  • Max

Stop trolling and go away kid kenny.

  • Pyro

Dude what's up with the caps? When I read your comment, I see myself yelling. hahaha

  • pfelds

he will finish the season, but come may, his contract goes caput, and he goes to roma. we need jose to winthe CL so he feels complete in spain, and returns to chelsea, oor guus, but i doubt he would take a longterm position. i think our main issue here isnt just managerial, but all of our backroom staff. our youth academy, be they local or global is insufficient, we need to invest in staff members with more ambition, vision, and collective spirit to build a future, no more isolating figures, or ulterior motives. roman wants to be involved, then we should sell him on a cohesive scout network and a strong academy, also we should be looking to drop some of the star-power players on the team , if we free up the roster for younger lesser known players who can compete for places and have a chance to break in to the 1st team we have a possibility to create a great team with longterm viability. currently our senior squad is too comfortable and assured of playtime, and our reserves or academy boys don't have much hope or chance to break out. we really just need a clear cut goal for our club, this doesnt mean we do the arsenal thing and build ou own team like wenger necesarily, we just need an identity, and hopefully not an identity like real, for galacticos squads are inherently unstable and expensive, and often do not produce results sufficient for expectations and fan satisfation

  • Pyro

Chelsea Football Club is starting to look like Real Madrid 2 years ago. Lots of cash, but not stability. I believe the main issue at Chelsea isn't the players or the manager but the owner. Roman needs to understand that he isn't the manager. He needs to ask his manager what players he wants. Not force players on the manager. I feel bad for Carletto. He has no freedom. At AC Milan, he was trusted by Silvio Berlusconi, but at Chelsea he has to stand Roman Abramovich's dictatorship; the unfair thing is that you as supporters of the club don't deserve this. No one likes to see their club in shambles.
A friendly Liverpool and Barcelona fan

  • Gani Tapha

It is either Gus or Mourinho, before chelsea can make any impact in the world of football again. Carlos is not a premier league coach not even a good coach again. So chelsea can sell and buy but they should leave Drogba if they really want to make any impact next season. A word is enough for a wise.

  • arn00b

What a complete failure. The noobs failed completely. Chelsea would've gone far this season had they kept the same team from last year - Ballack in midfield, sending passes to Drogba forward. But I forgot, they're old, finished.

Chelsea has a thing for rewarding bad performances and punishing good ones. Drogba's excellent performances in the last few games has gotten him less and less playing time. The more he impresses during his smaller windows to impress, the less time he gets. And it's exactly the opposite for Torres. The worse he does, the more he gets to play.

Now, we want to punish people - Anelka. You have almost single-handedly took us to this stage of CL. So it's your fault that Torres didn't score while you were a winger.

And when we brought your preferred strike partner Drogba, you totally failed. You had 15 whole minutes to make an impact with him, but you failed. Surely, a Drogba-Kalou partnership is better than Drogba-Anelka partnership. Surely.

We deserved to lose. Avram Grant had a trophy-less season, but he was fighting till the end. This season was total capitulation from mid-season.

  • Wow, I'm surprised that my finger moved the mouse and clicked 'No', entirely on it's own. Nothing against Carlo, I love him, but he needs to bring some passion and pride back to the locker room.

  • Josh

First i would like to say lampard and essien are worthless at this point. We don't need a new manager, we need a new squad. Keep bane, Torres (only because of the $ spent), Luiz, sturridge, ramires, cech, kakuta, flomo (given good support he could do well, and JT as long as we aren't afraid to bench him.

  • Max

I personally don't know if he will, I think he will finish out the season and then part ways with CFC. I don't want him to though, because one of our problems is managerial instability (among other things).

Sure, we really do need to overhaul the squad. I think we should ship off Anelka, Kalou, Malouda, Bosingwa. I think Mikel should be given one more season to prove his worth, then make a decision. We need a playmaker! Really, really, really badly.

Also, we do NOT need to replace Terry yet. Whoever thinks that, I'm sorry but I think you're really far off the mark. Why in the hell would we replace one of the worlds best center backs? So he has a bad game every now and then, it happens. He's only 30, he doesn't need a replacement.

  • Agree with you about JT, I actually think he has been on great form for much of the season!

  • Seth

i think he'll survive, solely out of respect for his success last year and because Roman can't have found a replacement now. plus, what would a new manager do now? win us the league? it would simply create a riff in an already disgruntled dressing room.
he's certainly gone in the summer though. should be as well, in my opinion. but if the murmurs about Torres and locker room interference from Roman are true, then the Russian needs to take a serious look at himself as well. high level clubs like this don't blow through managers at the rate we've been. Carlo, Guus, Avram, Scolari, Jose in 4 years? goodness.
