The plot thickens: Buck bought 100 CPO shares in April 2011

This is highly interesting. Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck, according to an insightful piece in today’s Independent, purchased 100 Chelsea Pitch Owners shares at £100 each in April 2011. This entitles him to the maximum 100 votes in the upcoming apparent make-or-break meeting on 27 October.

Shady?

The news of Buck’s purchase comes in the context of a piece that focuses on how leaders of the Say No CPO campaign requested a register of shareholders from Chelsea. The club duly obliged, only problem was that the 600-page document wasn’t exactly updated. At least one man on the list – former CPO chairman Tony Banks – died in 2006. Not exactly the kind of information these hard-liners were looking for in their scheme to turn Yes votes into No votes by any means necessary (a plan with which I strongly disagree). Then again, one has to wonder why on earth the CPO doesn’t have its own regularly updated register. But I digress.

Back to Buck. This purchase sends all the wrong signals, even if that wasn’t the intention – although I reckon he knew what the hell he was doing. How could he not?

Why would our chairman purchase the maximum amount of shares six months ahead of a critical vote? Um, maybe it’s because he clearly had insider knowledge that such a vote was on the horizon. Does anyone actually believe he hoarded up these shares with the intention of protecting the club? I mean, really. Come on son. By doing this, Buck is going against the very thing the CPO was set up to do. It is, of course, not technically against the law but, from a moral standpoint, it’s just a horrible move. This is akin to insider training in a sense.

From a public relations standpoint, this could prove to be a disaster. Hell, it may already be a disaster. Supporters are already calling for Buck’s resignation, or, at the very least, a public statement from the man saying he will not participate in the vote.

I’ve never had anything against Buck, but this is an issue he cannot simply sweep under the rug. Answers are needed. Anyway, what are your thoughts on this?

I want to go off topic (sorry), I read somewhere about Liverpool's TV plan. why do Liverpool people give themselves so much credit? why do they think they sell more than for instance New Castle (No offense to them) ... Liverpool is not considered top 4 anymore.
They are stupid, they will kill EPL with that. They make weak team weaker and weaker.

It matters, but matters not so much that they are currently not in the top 4. They certainly look very likely to make a good fight to be back in that top tier this season.

No matter how you look at it, Liverpool has a greater worldwide audience comparable to the likes of Barcelona/Real Madrid/Manchester Utd etc and that's simply where the reference came from.

isnt that guy from Curb your Enthusiasm?

  • That's Larry David, ha. This has been discussed at length here before. Note the comment from LEEGREENWELL. If you look up Larry David and Bruce Buck, they are dead-on for each other - thus the use of the David image.

  • Shutitlol

I spoke to Bruce Buck in December 2010 at our home game against Everton, not only is he a very kind, well mannered, polite man but he is also, at his very core, deeply concerned with the club and it's future. After meeting/conversing with Bruce for about 20 minutes i can safely say that i trust him 100% to do the right thing by the club, same with Roman, yes they are money men but it's not all about the bottom dollar and i think time will tell this. the move, if it happens, is purely to assist us in meeting FFFP rules, nothing more, nothing less. I love the bridge, but sometimes we have to hurt the ones we love for the greater good.

WASNT SURE LARRY DAVID WAS THE CHAIRMAN OF CHELSEA,

    THOUGHT IT WAS BRUCE BUCK.

  • I really hope this is sarcastic.

If not then my word. You do realize they are dead-on for each other, right?

  • Did anyone else know that EBALJT is the President of the CPO?

  • orthodoxyordeath

    That's sort of awesome!

  • This is bad from a PR perspective. But, does nothing to stop Roman on his quest for a new stadium. Fans, players, and die-hards will just have to fall in line. It's time for a change.

  • roman spent almost 1 billion pounds on this team. if you think that some random people are going to stand in his way then... this guy made his BILLIONS in the wild wild post communist russia which was known around the world as the most corrupt underhanded brutal hardcore clusterfuck of a place on the planet. stop getting your emotions tied up on this subject. you will end up heart sick. Chelsea FC are going to move. End of.

  • Not quite sure what you're getting at. This post has nothing to do with the move. It has everything to do with Bruce Buck, the chairman of the club, purchasing CPO shares six months before the proposal was announced.
