The real enemy in the Robinho saga
By: Jack | September 3rd, 2008Most Chelsea fans, including myself, has been quick to label Manchester City’s newest darling, Robinho, greedy. Or heartless. Or a greedy, heartless mercenary.

After allowing the blow of losing out on the Brazilian — to City no less — to expunge from my memory, I’m now beginning to believe the real enemy in this whole ordeal is, of course, Real Madrid.
Lets look at the facts.
Using the impeccable work of Sid Lowe as foundation for my argument, it’s clear Robinho had no choice but to leave Real Madrird — no matter the destination. Some of the slights from Madrid are known, some arent.
- Robinho was openly dangled by the club in its attempt to lure Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid
- Robinho was among the club’s lowest earners salary wise, dwarfed by even Royston Drenthe(?!?)
- When Robby asked to renegotiate his contract, he was denied. Instead, Real chose to renew the contracts of Guti, Raúl, Iker Casillas and even Mamadou Diarra.
- In a hilariously arrogant move, the club offered to flush out a new deal for Robinho after a move for CRon7 was ultimately ruled out
After looking at that laundry list, I assume most of us can understand why Robinho felt he had no choice but to leave Madrid. Now, it comes down to him joining Manchester City instead of holding out for a move to Chelsea.
Any man who calls his own press conference to announce his intention to join a club, in this case Chelsea, is pretty set in his ways. But, now that we can kind of see this case through Robinho’s eyes, it makes sense why he joined City.
It might look like a snub to the Stamford Bridge faithful, but I would wager a hefty sum that  Real presented Robinho with an ultimatum: You can either join Manchester City or rot here at Madrid. Which do you fancy?
If that was your only choice, and you had suffered through a year like he has, wouldn’t you jump at the chance to leave regardless of the destination?
Now, I’m not purging Robinho from any wrong doing. The kid certainly has plenty of issues, some to which Pele has offered solutions. But I can certainly see why he felt he needed to leave Real, and I hope that somehow he can find a level of comfort and stability in his life — as long as it’s not against Chelsea.

That’s exactly what I was arguing on the Madrid Offside the other day…

I think it is just terrible the way clubs toy with players lifes and careers. True, they are being paid huge amounts of money, but to make a player stay and sit on the bench or train with the reserves if just horrible. If the team cannot employ the player, they should let them go elsewhere.

robinho is just a spoiled kid. he did the exact same thing to leave santos and join madrid. i’m glad he did not end up in chelsea (nothing against the club). but maybe this taught him something. now he is the top star in a shitty club.

chelsea never actually agreed a fee for him did they? which kind of negates your argument of Robinho ‘choosing’ where to play.

Some incorrect facts:
1. He was never offered to MU. Real made one bid for Ronaldo, and it was all cash. Anything else was press speculation that the club has no control over.
2. Robinho was offered a bumper contract offer as soon as he returned to training with Real. It would have put him at 4 million a year, which would be one of the higher salaries at Real.
3. The deals for Guti, Raul and Casillas were life time deals, and of course took precedent over Robinho. They are club captains for christ sake.
4. Fourth point is just wrong. Contract negotiations were stopped once Robinhos agent began to “speak” to the press.
While I do agknowledge that Real is not completely clean in this matter, I hardly think Real are the sole bad guy in this deal. Wagner Riberio certainly is not a virtuous man after all this, while Robinho never agreeing a fee with Chelsea was because Real did not sell to Chelsea at their bid, which they did not have to. Man City had a higher offer, and it was accepted, and thats that. Point fingers all you want, but these kind of transfer deals are the EPLs making. Dimitar Berbatov ring a bell?

“Anything else was press speculation that the club has no control over.”
Sorry, Corey, but if you actually believe that Real Madrid has “no control” over the likes of Marca and AS, then I’m afraid that I need to tell you something about the Tooth Fairy.

Real has no formal connection to AS or Marca. They may be pro-Madrid, but what they print is hardly ever the truth from what goes on in the Real front office. The fact that people think Real has this broad control over the media just seems ridiculous, conspiracy theories are usually correct….

The key word being “formal”.
It is often not in Madrid’s interest for them to print the truth (as in much of the C Ronaldo saga), and Marca and AS are more than willing to help them in that regard.
Just ask your friend Sid Lowe, who you (very rightly) praise above.
And yes, the relationship between Barca and El Mundo Deportivo and Sport is not materially different (though EMD is currently engaged in a campaign to destabilise Laporta).
Now, about that money under your pillow. Your parents put it there.

gareth, um, I never said Robinho chose City over Chelsea.
Corey, you think I’m going to believe you over Sid Lowe? Get the hell out of here.Posted from

I dont know who Sid Lowe is and I dont really care. All papers have their slant, if a paper is based in Madrid then of course it will support Real/Atletico. No different then papers in England, Italy etc. But to say that a newspaper is in the pocket of a team, officially or not, is ridiculous. Again, conspiracy theories are usually correct…
Bruno said it, I wont repeat. Instead of blaming Real for loosing out on a player, look to the player. He took the money and is gonna run (or fly in a helicopter) with it.

With your blinding bias Corey, I’m surprised you aren’t employed by Marca or AS.

Im not suppose to stand behind my team, the very team? Is my blidning bias more of a real opinion then a regurgitation of the English press and all of its heresay that people like you live off of? Your closed view of the football world is sad.

You’re an idiot, sir. When Chelsea are in the wrong, you won’t see me defending them. More over, the fact that you dismiss Sid Lowe’s claims without even knowing who he is — the man worked as a translator for a couple of your Madridistas — makes you look like even more of a fool. Go back to having 5-year-old Photoshop tantrums.

Then your not a ture fan. Which makes sense, because Chelsea was a mid-table team all of 5 years ago. Right or wrong, I stand behind Real Madrid. And what the hell does Sid Lowe have to do with anything? I could throw out journalists who I regularly read to make myself sound more sophisticated and validated, but I dont because this is a blog.
And if I had photoshop, I could do alot with it. I have paint. Nice try at a cheap shot.

Jack, regarding your point that Robinho was earning less than Drenthe, that’s not the club’s fault, it’s ROBINHO’S AND HIS AGENT’S FAULT, for agreeing to those terms. As I said in the Real Madrid forum, he wanted to come to Chelsea all along, of course it was about the money, and he just used all the speculation provided by AS, Marca, etc to try to force the club into accepting a transfer.
Another thing, it says a lot about him to call for a press conference just hours before his team (at that time) it’s about to start the season. Just saying
Take care everybody

Dude just keeps digging himself a bigger hole. First, Chelsea finished second in the EPL and made the CL semis five years ago. Second, you’re saying I’m not a true fan because I don’t agree with/condone all my club does? Hilarious stupid. Third, Sid Lowe has everything to do with it. You’re asking me to believe you — a nobody — over a man renowned the world over, especially in Spain, for his accuracy and analysis.
Cesar, your point has no foundation because Robinho arrived at Real before Drenthe. He asked to re-up afterward, they refused.
