Where did Chelsea blow the Premiership?
By: Jack | May 12th, 2008There were a slew of questionable performances — and results — from Chelsea this season. Many of these could be seen as reasoning as to why the Blues failed to capture their third Prem crown in four years. Which particular one do you think was the most devastating? Or was it an injury to or lack of form from a certain player that cost us valuable points (Sidwell)? And no, I’m not arguing that Manchester United shouldn’t have won the league title. Fergie’s boys certainly are deserving champions.
Chelsea 1, Wigan 1 — April 14 08
What can you say about this match? A drab performance, probably worthy of the final result. Funny enough, Wigan had the edge in possession that night, 52-48. Ultimately, wastefulness in front of goal cost us — the Blues put 10 shots on goal.
Chelsea 4, Aston Villa 4 — Dec. 26 07
This was just gar-bage. Boxing Day produced the worst for Chelsea, Gareth Barry converting a 90th-minute penalty to snatch a point at the Bridge. Barry’s spot kick arrived just two minutes after Ballack had “presumably” won it for us. This one hurts a little more than the others for me, just on the fact that its a penalty that cost us.
Tottenham 4, Chelsea 4 — March 19 08
Robbie Keane drove the dagger in here two minutes from full time. One of the most thrilling matches of the season no doubt, one that drove me to throw furniture all over my apartment.
Chelsea 1-1 Everton — Nov. 11 07
Tim Cahill pops up with the leveler in the 90th. Sound familiar? This in a game where we had 60 percent of the possession and a 10-2 shots on goal advantage.

How could you forget the scoreless draws against Blackburn (JM’s last Prem game) and Fulham!

That Blackburn game was at Ewood, traditionally a difficult place to play. The Fulham game was early in Grant’s tenure. Plus, it’s not like we had a lead in either of the matches.

finnegan – no, you’re not.
I don’t think you can say that Chelsea lost the title. They were never in front in the last few months, it was first Arsenal’s to lose, which they did, and then United’s, which we didn’t. If you lost at all it was the lead you had over us right at the start. I always think teams perform according to expectations – if United had got another 10 points this season, Chelsea would have got at least another 8. Therefore it’s all about keeping the lead once you’ve got it. So maybe you should be looking more at September / October / November time.
Also, two of the games above, and so many more from Chelsea this season and in recent seasons (Fenerbache first leg springs to mind), you’ve gone a goal in front then sat on it. Most of the time it results in 1-0, but sometimes it bites you back to 1-1. Hence your poor goal difference. I think a team like Chelsea should be aiming for 2 or 3-0’s, maybe that’s been part of the difference this season.

It has been an amazing comeback from Chelsea. They’ve shown great character after a poor start to the season. But people always need more. This is league football & you tend to lose points at times. Manchester & arsenal did it too. I’d say its been a great season even if we end up winning nothing!..the best part of it their football has been a treat to watch!
