Who won’t join Chelsea this summer: The official rumor roundup

By: Jack | June 12th, 2009

The summer transfer market is now open. You know what that means, don’t you?

Links with nearly every star under the sun (c. Kaka). Yes, wonderful links to wonderful players; links which are promptly denied or deleted with extreme force. Some of these rumors, mind you, have substance … that is until said linked player publicly reveals his distaste for England or a childhood love of  bitch assness (prevalent in Barcelona I’m told).

So, who’s next to turn down an opportunity to be a part of the 2010 treble winners? Let’s take a look shall we? Reminded: This is only a partial list; we’ve been linked with mucho jugadors already this summer.

Franck Ribery, Bayern Munich
The scarred Frenchman with an even scarier game is a wonderful player. A wonderful player in a position — wing, preferrably right — that should be our top priority this offeseason. With that being said, Ribery has been linked with almost every major club already this summer; Real Madrid, Manchester United and Barcelona are among his suitors along with us. … F***.
Further dampening my mood regarding Franck was his recent statement regarding England: “(I won’t move to England) because they have the same weather as in Germany,” he’s quoted as saying in Telefoot. Now, that quote seems a bit sketchy; However, I’m assuming the sentiment is not.
Still, there’s hope the 26-year-old will be in blue next season — not much, though. Bayern have confirmed their interest in Jose Bosingwa. Could the Chelsea and Portugese fullback be part of a deal for Ribery? Who knows (I highly doubt it).
Price: £50-65 million
Likelihood of joining: 3

David Villa, Valencia
Never really understood this one, though I’m pleasantly surprised the club decided to pursue Villa regardless of his obvious intention to remain in Spain. Chelsea’s Spanish scout, Juan Cruz Sol, has revealed in Marca that we actually lodged a bit — rejected, of course — and that the Spanish striker that makes Fernando Torres look average is in “advanced talks” with Real Madrid. Obviously, never say never as nothing is confirmed … but I’ll say it: This isn’t going to happen, people.
Price: £40-50 million
Likelihood of joining: Nil

Sergio Aguero, Atletico Madrid
Now this, this is what I’m talking about. Among positions targeted for improvement this summer, striker is near the top of the list. An impact player is needed, and Kun is ideal. Young, explosive, skillful — all components Chelsea in its current makeup is lacking somewhat.
I’ve already written about the 21-year-old, but new developments have further wettened my appetite. The latest is a statement from Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo welcoming offers for Aguero. He also reveals there have been no concrete offers — get on that Romes.
Price: £50 million
Likelihood of joining: 7

Yuri Zhirkov, CSKA Moscow
Chelsea has been strongly linked with the Russian international for some time, as a replacement/backup for both Ashley Cole and Florent Malouda on the left side. All this linkage with no real hint of official contact with CSKA or a firm bid.
Then, just a few days ago, Zhirkov unleashed this little gem for all to see: “I would prefer to play with Barça, although that does not mean that I will automatically discard Chelsea,” he’s been quoted as saying in several media outlets. Well, beat it then grouch.
That’s not the even half of it, though, people. Now, the Daily Mail, is reporting that Roman himself has stepped in to convince Zhirkov to ink with Chelsea. Did this intervention involve a waterboard? Either way, it looks as if the 25-year-old may be our first signing of the summer.
I think the real question is whether or not we need to be spending £15-20 million on a potential backup. The answer clearly is no. I’d much rather see this type of money spent on a player like Valencia — destined to join United it seems — who could fill our right-sided problem with ease. I like Zhirkov, but we really don’t need him at the moment. Nonetheless, depth has its advantages.
Price: £15-20 million
Likelihood of joining: 7

Zhirkov nastiness…

Edin Dzeko, Wolfsburg
This guy, who knows what his deal is. Dzeko, a superb prospect it must be said, was first linked with Chelsea in May when he revealed the club had shown interest in him. A month later, Dzeko, a 23-year-old striker with height (6-4) who has 34 goals in 60 appearances for the newly-crowned Bundesliga champions, has expressed a desire to leave Wolfsburg, stay at Wolfsburg, play in the Premier League and, now, fullfill a dream and join AC Milan. Is everyone following?
Price: £10-15 million
Likelihood of joining: 2

Glen Johnson, Portsmouth
Old boy Johnson? This has to be a joke right? Buy a player for £6 million, sell him for 4, then buy him back for 15-plus?
You’re havin’ a laugh. (Watch us sign him now.)
Price: £15-18 million
Likelihood of joining: 1

Ashley Young, Aston Villa
Young was among the first players linked with Chelsea following the Ancelotti appointment. He fits into our plans at a priority position (winger) and, at 23, provides much-needed youth for a side gradually reaching its apex. He also would bring with him bags of pace and a fairly solid service game — his two main assets, a pair this current Chelsea side severely lacks.
Still, I don’t know how I feel about a move for him. I think he struggles to improve play and lacks versatility  – enough for me to question whether or not he has the necessary skills to adapt against better defenders. On last season’s evidence, that’s a resounding no.
Then again, he proved to be a fulcrum for Villa, the player who was consistently called upon to produce not only service but goals as well. That wouldn’t be the case at Chelsea; perhaps he would thrive in a less demanding role. That remains to be seen, though.
And, based on the ridiculously bloated fee we’re looking at since he’s English, I think there are much better — and cheaper — options on the market.
Price: £20-25 million
Likelihood of joining: 4-5

AC Milan quartet: Andre Pirlo, Pato, Gennaro Gattuso, Clarence Seedorf
With the African Cup of Nations stealing Essien and Mikel for a month or so next season, we certainly need an experienced midfielder or two to provide a seamless transition in their absence. Pirlo appears a solid candidate — not a good or great one — an exsquisite playmaker that relies on vision rather than speed. Would his game translate to the high-paced English style? Perhaps. Is he worth £20 million? Absolutely not.
Pato is the clearly the most attractive prospect of the four — a former target of ours who, at 19, already has six caps for Brazil. Though new Milan coach Leandro has insisted he will not be leaving Italy, the Duck will meet with Ancelotti in the coming weeks. For what reason we don’t know. Could it be for a transfer to Chelsea? Maybe. Could it also be a bit of gamesmanship to receive a pay hike? Definitely.
Price: £20, £30, £10, £8
Likelihood of joining: 4, 2, 1, 1

In all fairness, Ancelotti hasn’t even taken over yet (July 1). I guess we should all wait until then and see who decided to turns us down.

Who am I kidding? I don’t want to wait, and neither do you. Drop me a few lines on who you think would be a good fit — and who wouldn’t. Any other targets you want to bring up? Do it.

Start the discussion, people.

Real madrid makes Romes look like a poor man. Whos the one throwing the damn cash now, Eh Platini.
Nice work Jack, I don’t care if we buy the damn star trek crew on the last minute of the transfer window. I want my blues to be a COMPLETE squad.
Oh I want Zhirkov Romes. Buy him a freeging boat and bring him to the bridge.

Ezequiel ivan Lavezzi: Allrounder in the attack and has no problems comming over the right wing, a player in the type of Leo Messi but stronger built and equipt with a real fighting spirit similar to Kuit, has a good assist record, exactly what we need and on top of that could be a real bargain because he and napoli are having some serious trouble and it looks like they want too sell him desperatly…
Samuel Eto’o: Probably the only player who could step into didi’s shoes supposed he leaves us, but remembering the words of perez i fear it may really happen… in an interview before he was announced new real president he said a deal had been done with drogba and if he became president he would bring the ivorian with him to madrid.
So Eto is younger than drogba and has a better scoring record, he has the right spirit to succeed in the EPL, contrary too what many think Eto is a real team player (aas drogba is, drogba is though more valuable in defence), Eto got pace and a good shot all u need too succeed in EPL (as torres has shown), but it would indicate that our build up play is more precise and because we will lack the phisical presents of drogba that makes things easer for the likes of ballack, lampard, essien. Eto would also require a bit more creativity (lampard, J.Cole, sometimes Kalou and Malouda can provide but it needs more… a guy like lavezzi or pandev, zarate, ribery, carzola, david silva etc…)

Without Eto’o s game wont be that effective but i still see him scoring at least 25 goals a season..

Gago: There is gona be a sale out in madrid and i believe we should take part and grab ourself one particular player like we did with Makelele. Now in madrid they prefer lassana a player we all know to good but in my opinion gago has the bigger potential as a more modern defensiv middfielder. He is very inteligent, technicaly briliant, good eye for team mates, but lackes physical presents (very very similar too pirlo but without the experiance). I believe he is a player who will grow in time and become from year too year better and it would also alow Essien or and that is my personal opinion Mikel too player further up front. Mikel is wasted in the number 6 role, his creativity has not been seen by the chelsea supporters. we always bemoan him been lazzy but i would surgest he is because he doesnt feel fully comfortable in his role. He would be a different class further up front with the licence too link up with the strikers…

I’m going to co-sign the hell out of the previous comment.

Instead of supposedly chasing after these ‘big name stars’ I’m praying Chelsea are being sensible and looking at players like Lavezzi and Pandev who have ridiculous amounts of potential. If Liverpool gets its hands on Lavezzi I’ll be pretty pissed.

Fernando Gago never even occurred to me, but again – a thousand times Yes, Yes, Yes. I’m Nigerian, so believe me you do NOT want to get me started on Mikel, but let’s just say I would love to see him out of the defensive mid role.

There’s also Nilmar, who will be on Brazil’s Confed Cup squad. He bombed pretty epically for Lyon when he was 19/20 years old, but he’s been good for Corinthians and Internacional since. I really like him; he’s quite fast and very good on his feet, though he might be too small for the EPL.

as a chelsea fan i think Alexendra Pato,Yuri Zhirkov, and Kun Aguero r the ones chelsea need… for Ashley Young i think we dont need to spend 20 million for a right winger as we already hav Joe Cole recovering from an injury…. and will be back sooon… and we hav to chooose betweeen one off the striker like Pato or Kun… other then that we need a low profile right winger who can cover joe cole for his injury and may michael mancienne is a perfect fit he is ayoung player with lot off talent i have seen him playing and think that he can be a brillliant wing and also a right back soo he is capable off both…

About Pirlo,Gattuso and Seedorf???? why these players????? i mean why we neede veteran players like this ???? i dont try sum new young fresh bloood from the academy???? wat r they doing there in academies and reserve team dont the deserve a chances … look at manchester and other team they hav started to think about young and if we need a replacement for Essien and John Obi Mikal… then we rather concerntrate on our young players as they r realllly important in the future and they deserve sum chances chelsea hav alredy thrown away a young player like Ben Sahar who was soo exciting in slovakian shirt… i saw him in the video.. and i dont understand that y didnt that guy got much chances when joe cole was injured and malouda wasnt performing???? i m a die heart chelsea fan but unfortunatly chelsea r looking like Englands Real madrid… but i hope for the best … i wud lov to seee PATO STURRIDGE DROGBA ANELKA and MOUSSA as striking partners… and we dont need any one in midfield get sum youngster from the reserve giv them a chance let them play for that lovly crest… and at defence we neeed to give michail mancienne lot of chances… and definitly Yuri zhirkov… if he is capable of lots of thing than he can adjust himself on the right side also as Arjen robben did for chelsea and if we need a Center Midfielder hen we shud look at Rafail Van Dar Vaaart… he can suit at stamford bridge … i wud love to see him in Chelsea colorrs…

    Excuse me, but…
Where will John Obi Mikel be playing at the beginning of the 09/10 season?
    When will we know this?
I want to buy Chelsea’s new shirt with “Mikel and number 12″.

All interesting comments/suggestions, thanks guys. I’m particularly intrigued in the idea of signing Gago, though I may be wrong in thinking he’s a bit in the vein of an Essien, except with a bit more technique.

And, CSD, I think that’s good news. If the man can afford a mega-yacht, he’s must not being doing too bad on the economic front, eh? Bring on Kun & Co.

Timeout, did someone call Gago “technically brilliant”? You guys clearly have not seen enough of Gago. He is so poor in the Madrid shirt and is so much worse than Lass it’s a shame. He is not a quality footballer at all. Technically brilliant… wow. Some people just don’t watch games nowadays…

Excuse me? I’ve watched Gago several times, including in Argentina’s loss to Ecuador last weekend. He may not be technically “brilliant,” but he’s a very solid player — proof of his 32 starts this past season. Plus, he’s only 23. Jog on.

Everyone is saying that Man Utd know when to get rid of people (Beckham, Ronaldo etc) but they have yet to mention the best move they ever made – sending Peter Kenyon to Chelsea. The man is useless and does anyone know what Frank Arnesen does? How many youngsters have Chelsea developed over the last three years? Those two should be sacked.

Jack, why did he have 32 starts this past season? Because Real Madrid had no other options. I repeat, they had no other options. Juande Ramos opted to be pragmatic and started two DMs in Lass and Gago and Gago was put to shame by Lass every single match. Players like Guti, van der Vaart, De la Red, and Sneijder were either too injured or in the case of the dutchies, in terrible form and Real couldn’t afford to have a creative midfielder therefore Gago started. Please download some games and actually watch them before you tell me to jog on. Gago a modern defensive midfielder lol? Shouldn’t a “modern” defensive midfielder know how to pass and know when not to go ground? Surely you’re talking about a different Gago, right?

Anyway, that whole tear Real went on to close the season, I’m sure that was in spite of having a wasteaway in midfield. Brilliant.

Yeah, and they didn’t beat us, either. Work on your material, man.

I am guessing you are a Madrid fan. In that case it was lovely watching you guys get whooped 6-2.

    Anyways,
Jack, I honestly think we should pursuit a right-wing and a striker. Malouda has been class at the end of the season and I wouldn’t like to see him go. El Kun is perfect for the striker role and perhaps try to snatch Silva from Valencia/Liverpool or Ribery from Munich/Madrid.

If we buy Glen Johnson I will honestly go bezerk.
How illogical is it to purchase a right-back every year? Especially one that was previously a Chelsea Player.

03/04 – Glen Johnson and Geremi
    04/05 – Paulo Ferreira
05/06 – Lassana Diarra (who turned out to be a class player)
06/07 – Boulahrouz (played right back many games)
07/08 – Belletti and Ivanovic (also a center back)
    08/09 – Bosingwa
09/10 – Who will be the winner?

Sorry Jack I usually love hearing your opinions and what you have to say about Chelsea , but I must admit that you have this one wrong . Gago ? Im with Jnice all the way. Potential yes but quality no at least not yet , and certainly not Chelsea quality . Barca 6 – Madrid 2 ‘Nuff said. Completely and utterly invisible in that match just like he has been countless times.

    Ribery $60million! you’re having a laugh!
Villa! no chance, will never happen.
    Aguero for 50mill is stupid.
Zhirkov i thought was a done deal?
Dzeko, no idea never heard of him.
Glen Johnson is pure paper talk/gobshite.
Ashley Young would be good, but he’ll be too pricey.
AC Milan quartet, a couple of these are, i think, the most likely.

Well Khalid, at least you articulated your argument with some class. I never said Chelsea should sign Gago, either — I, personally, would not — but I still think he’s a solid player.

And what the hell are you on about, matt? Ribery has been linked with us, and he’ll clearly cost 60-plus mil. And why, may I ask, is 50mil for a 21-year-old phenom a “stupid” decision?
