Zhirkov on his way out?

By: Jamie | August 1st, 2011

Is it “so long and thanks for the goal in Moscow” to Yuri Zhirkov?

Reports in Russia are claiming that Zhirkov arrived this morning and has signed with FC Anji for 15 million Euros. Nothing is on either club’s website yet, though.

Zhirkov’s Chelsea career hasn’t exactly been sparkling, given he has often fallen into the Alex-esque injury mire where he disappears for periods of time with no one explaining exactly why. Ancelotti also tended to use him as backup at left-back instead of where I think he could be more useful, in left midfield.

If Zhirkov goes, that just leaves more of a gap creative-wise in our midfield. Malouda will need more competition for that left side of midfield considering his tendency to dip in form. Not sure if I’m best pleased with the decision to ship Zhirkov out, but good luck to him if that is the case!

so this summer we're getting rid of a wide player and have already bought a cm (the barca kid). and we're looking to buy modric..  maybe we should bid for nasri instead. i feel he's a better player than modric, cheaper and can play wide as well.

So our first major move is the sale of Zhirkov. Wondered when it was gonna happen. Love the way AVB is showing respect by not marching in buying and selling everyone.

This probably means we're getting Modrić. That will probably be the end of our Summer moves (according to Gourlay). Courtouis, Romeu, Modrić in, Zhirkov out. Not bad. At the beginning I was sceptical but now I began to love AVB's "master plan". Or at least how I see it. We'll probably lose Anelka, Ferreira, Bosingwa and maybe more neyt year. Drogba will probably (sure hope so considering he's our best player) get an extension. Hopefuly our youngsters will be able to preform this season. The likes of Kakuta, Chalobah, Van Aanholt, Bertrand, Romeu (I'm not mentioning Mceachran and Sturridge because their pretty much part of the 1st team already). If they do then we might not see many purchases neyt summer (or winter). Maybe a RB like Van der Wiel (almost certaint about that one), a versitaile CM (I love Mario Goetze. We've been missing the likes of Ballack and Cole last season. He'd be able to adapt wonderfuly to our 4-3-3 being that he's capable of playing in the midfield or on the wings) and probably some wingers (or one). Neymar comes to mind but he's probably set for Madrid next season (but a lot can happen in a year - that's why I'm mentioning him), more preferably Adam Johnson. Looks like his City carrer is pretty much over just as it began. Don't think they'll ship him out this season but next year they might. Plus he's english (homegrown rule).

So I see our team for the future seasons like this:

                          Cech
      VdW(Bane) - Luiz - Terry - Cole
     Ramires(Josh)-Mikel-Modrić(Goetze-Lamps)
         Sturridge-Torres-Johnson(Malouda)

Sturridge and Mikel are going to be the discoveries of the season (hopefuly). Not that they are not good already but I see Mikel solidifiying his spot as the premier holding midfielder on the team and in the league (with Essien backing him up and being able to fill any holes in the midfield). Plus the revival of Fernando Torres. And we might see a Benayoun explosion.

What do you think. I'm pretty excited. AVB's got me beleiving that we might become a team that makes players rather than buying them. Althougt we might not get great results this season and Roman deceides to blow 100 mil on washed up players and fire AVB at the end of the season (not likely but always a possibilty)

What do you think? Jack, Devin?

P.S. please excuse any vocabulary mistakes and tiping errors. English isn't my first language.

  • Seems to be confirmed at this point. 13.2 million quid, he's already agreed a 4 year deal, and flew directly to Moscow for his medical after the Asia Cup.

Sad to see him leave. Always felt like he was on the cusp of breaking out- or at least breaking something, ha.

  • Aw, I am sad. I always had a soft spot for him. He deserved to break out a la Malouda, he always had it in him. Just couldn't make it with the injuries.

Best of luck to him, hope he stays healthy.

well at least it was a pretty good one.

I think this just means that we're definitely bringing in another person.  If we didn't let Zhirkov walk, and we signed e.g. Modric, when the Bison comes back in January we would have to sell someone to comply with the amount of foreign/domestic players we're allowed to have.

    More games for Kakuta!

WHat happened to that great central midfield pairing of Lampard and Zhirkov then.... :D
    worse still ,  malouda stays!!!!
