Chelsea youngstas have all to play for

By: Jack | April 3rd, 2008

baah_essien_chelsea.jpgRoman noodles love his youngsters. He’ll be hoping they can make a little history in two weeks.

Chelsea’s youth team drew 1-1 with Manchester City on Thursday in the opening leg of the FA Youth Cup final at Stamford Bridge. The Blues, contesting the title for the first time since 1961, needed a second-half equalizer from Gael Kukata to draw level. Away goals do not count double here, so really, this match doesn’t really need to exist anymore.

According to the Guardian, which enjoys having a lil’ poke at Roman’s extravagant spending on the youth team, says City attacking duo Vladimir Weiss and Daniel Sturridge stole the show.

“The Slovakian winger Vladimir Weiss exhibited for most of the evening the sort of magical dribbling Stamford Bridge has rarely witnessed since the heyday of Arjen Robben and Damien Duff, and early in the second half he weaved his way through Chelsea’s defence before slipping the ball to Daniel Sturridge, an 18-year-old with first-team experience, who steered it into the net from 10 yards.”

Whatevs. Kakuta brought us back with a “powerful” header in the 66th minute to set up an enticing affair in Manchester. We closed the game the better, Kakuta producing a pair of fine chances and Tejera just missed giving the Blues a lead.

The second leg is on Wednesday April 16, at City of Manchester Stadium. Kick off is scheduled for 7.45 p.m.

The game was yesterday (Thursday) and I watched it live on Chelsea TV. The second leg will be shown live on Sky Sports. If the 2nd leg is half as good as last nite’s game, then viewers will be in for a treat.
I always knew that Sturridge would be a problem and he was. Weiss is a quality player - but we have our own. Kakuta, Stoch, Neilsen, Tejera, Woods etc etc.

Had the game ended 5-5 last night no one would have complained and in front of a Stamford Bridge crowd of 13,000.
