Pick Your Team: Valencia v Chelsea

By: Devin | September 26th, 2011

As is rapidly becoming a tradition around these parts, we open up the debate early in the week for everyone to chime in on their preferred formation, tactics, and player preferences heading into Wednesday’s difficult fixture against Valencia. More after the jump:

A moment of contemplation

I doubt you need a primer on what this is all about, but for those tuning in for the first time, we open it up to comments to see what formation you’d expect to see from our beloved brothers in Blue. As we’ve all determined after 8 games under the AVB regime, nothing can be taken for granted, no one is safe, and every position is under heavy competition. Villas Boas clearly prefers to enter each match with an open mindset, offering little in the way of certainty to the media, fans, and opposing teams. So, we make educated guesses as to what we’d expect. Considering that we’ve just completed two 10-men marathons, I think rotation is of the highest order. Sticking my head above the water, I’d venture the following formation:

Bench: Turnbull, Alex, Bertrand, Meireles, Malouda, Drogba, McEachran

This isn’t exactly a revelatory starting eleven. But, it is a strong one, and in my estimation one that is necessary for us to ensure a three-point haul from the Mestalla. Returning to the mix are Daniel Sturridge, David Luiz, and of course, Frankie Lamps. I opted to throw Luiz in over Alex because I felt he’s been in better form, but there’s no denying that Alex could use the minutes, so perhaps another rest is in store for England’s Brave. I wouldn’t be disappointed to see Cole drop to the bench in place of Bertrand, but I feel this might be one of those matches where Ash is asked to get on his saddle again. The midfield, from my view, has to have Mikel after his excellent performance over the weekend. Alongside, Ramires gets the call in honor of his brace, and Lampard is returned to the frame for a shot at redemption. Up top, Mata is the obvious choice to play against his old mates, Torres slides into the striking slot considering this may well be his last match for a month, and Sturridge hits the right side after missing the weekend.

Nothing fancy, nothing dramatic, but certainly a strong mix. What say you, friends?

    Great line-up...
But I woould love to see iva back on the right, cole on the left, luiz-alex in the center back positions...
My midfield would be exactly like yours... lamps, mikel, ramires... but on top, I think kalou should start instead of danny... the kid needs to be put under a bit of pressure to up his game, me thinks he has been a bit complacent lately, and he's too young to grow a big head... Go chelsea!

Please get your facts right before sticking your head out of the water.. Bretrand is not eligible for champions league

sorry to say guys, but Bertrand isnt in Champions league squad. And nor is Oriol Romeu.

    A 4-2-3-1 with:
Cech: We need our best keeper for this big game
Bosingwa: Has been in good form, looks weak defensively once again though.
David Luiz: Been in fine form and deserves a start as we rest Iva for the Bolton game
    Terry: Captain. Leader. Legend.
    A. Cole: We need his experience and ability ahead of the highly-rated Bertrand.
    Obi Mikel: Brilliant vs. Swansea
Romeu: VERY impressed by him in the League Cup tie.
Anelka: Has been in decent form. Supplies Nando well. Come off late for Danny.
Lampard: He's on the road to redemption. Fantastic player.
Mata: Our player of the season so far.
Torres: Needs to take his chance in the games he's not banned in leading up to Arsenal game. And I believe he will take his chance.

    Vs. Bolton
Sturridge to maybe come in for Anelka
    Ivanovic for David Luiz
    Ramires for Romeu
    Drogba for Torres

Nice formation, and agree with your reasons. But, bit skeptical with midfield trio of Lampard, Romeu & Mikel. Romeu & Mikel are both defensive players, Lampard is quality player- but I think he still needs some support in opposition third.

  • Henrythrow1

     He'll play
    --------------------- Cech
    Boswinga -- Luiz -------------- Terry -- Cole
    ------------------- Meireles
    ------------- McEachran --- Lampard
    Sturridge ----------------------- Mata
    ------------------ Torres

  • Wayne

I love the pick your team pages..great new stuff!!

  • ph0bolus

    Cech
    Bertrand, Alex, Luiz, Bosingwa
    Mikel
    McEachrean Lampard
    Sturridge Malouda
    Torres

    Wouldn't mind seeing that.

  • Mikeyfoucs

No way AVB leaves out Mata, Ramires and Meireles. These 3 and Anelka have been key to unlocking Torres.
    I'd like to see
    -------------Cech
    Bos----Luiz----Terry----Cole
    ------------Mikel-
    -----Ramires----McEachrean---
    Sturridge---Torres------Mata

Anelka has been playing really well, but we need him fresh and fit through the season, so let's give Danny another run.

  • Kartago

And Terry, this is an important match!

  • Mix it up a tad, Andre.

Cech; Bos, Alex, Bob, Cole; Ramires, Romeu, Lampard; Kalou, Drogba, Mata

  • I can get behind this. But is Romeu available to play CL footy?

  • Indeed he is. Romelu was left out of the CL squad if you remember.
