Roma once turned down €70m for De Rossi from us?

Daniele De Rossi is out of contract at AS Roma in the summer. Club director Bruno Conti is adamant the midfielder will not be leaving the Italian capital. So much so that today he revealed that Roma once turned down a bid of €70 million from Chelsea for the player.

Really? Really?

Good, but not €70m good

What exactly did Conti say? Here you go:

De Rossi will stay at Roma, no doubt about it. I would like to remind people of the following: Chelsea offered €70m for him, a lot of money, but [then president] Rosella Sensi turned it down.

Weird. This smells of bullshit to me.

To quote heralded hustled Sean Carter: We don’t believe you, you need more people.

Then again, we are prone to throwing hefty bags of unmarked bills at superstar players. And, you know, De Rossi would have been a killer addition to the squad a few seasons back. But still, can’t see how a club that was as cash-strapped as Roma was before the recent takeover could have turned down a sum that great. So, with that being said, this sounds like pure publicity stunt.

Good luck to Roma. I hope they can hold on to De Rossi, I really do. If not, though, they might have some explaining to do, particularly to supporters over that supposed €70 mil.
