Farewell to a Legend

By: Jack | September 15th, 2008

It’s official. After months of searching for a new club, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink — one of my favorite players of all-time — has announced his retirement from football.

Hasselbaink’s most recent spell, with Cardiff City, ended in a messy divorce after the impetuous striker was not offered a contract extension following last season.

“He had offers to play in the Middle East, which he didn’t want to do,” said Hasselbaink’s agent Humphrey Nijman.

JFH, 36, is among the most prolific attackers in Premier League history, netting 128 times during nearly a decade in England.

The Suriname-born attacker joined Chelsea in 2000. He went on to score 86 goals over a four-year tenure for the Blues.

He made 23 appearances for the Netherlands, scoring nine times. He’s one of only two players to ever be picked for the national team without having ever played in the Dutch league — the other being Jordi Cruyff.

Hasselbaink’s goalscoring exploits probably are only rivaled by his legendary tantrums. Oh, and his ability to disappear from matches in an instant. One day you love him, the next, well, you know the rest. Nevertheless,  he had uncanny charisma and a flair for the dramatic.

I’ll never forget the man, then playing for Charlton, finding the back of the net at Stamford Bridge. Did he celebrate? No, he simply bowed his head in respect to his former club and walked away.

Nijman says JFH is looking to enter coaching. Could we see this man at the Bridge in the future? What about West Ham?

“It is Jimmy’s ambition now to become a coach,” added Nijman of a player who never played in his own domestic league.

Pure class Jimmy was. I hope I speak for many a Chelsea supporter when I say, he’ll truly be missed.
