Raise a pint for the Irish, they deserve it.
By: Jack | November 18th, 2009“Those that doubted football’s cruelty ought to have been on hand here in Paris.”
-David Hytner of the Guardian, following Ireland’s 1-1 draw (2-1 aggregate loss) to France on Wednesday.

Applaud these men.
This is obviously a non Chelsea-related post, but I don’t care. On this day, the Ireland national team deserves recognition across the board — across the world. Those boys in green are no doubt worthy of a spot at the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa. They won’t be there; a Thierry Henry hand — or two — made sure of that. But they should be.
So, I ask you to join me in raising a pint (a Guinness if you’ve got one) for the Irish. They deserve it.

What an awful way to end that game. Unfitting for either team.

I’m not a fan of either team but this is a ridiculous situation. The need for video replays has never been so apparent.

Possibly one of the worst ways to now qualify, unlucky lads.

Heartbreaking!! It reminisced UCL semi’s last season, how Chelsea’s been denied the 3 penalties ~~ one of which from Gerrard’s Pique handball~

i missed it on the highlights and had to check it again .. i was quite surprised Henry was a culprit .. he’s always been a class act as far as i’m concerned .. shame he’s going to be remembered for this ..

henry wasnt a cheat before he went to barcelona. probably thinks he can do anything he wants now after the charity his side received in the CL semi last season. yet another injustice in football.

The traditionalists are killing this game. The argument for video replay has never been stronger, and its counter-argument is growing weaker by the day. I simply don’t see the problem with instituting a challenge based video replay system – each side gets two challenges a half, or something along those lines, where they can challenge the call made whatever it is and the referee takes a moment to go review the video and speak to the 4th official in the box.
It takes all of like 30 seconds to jog over to the side of the pitch and review a 10 second clip from like three angles and make a 100% better informed decision. If you limit the number of challenges each side can make, then you force the side to choose them carefully because if they challenge a sloppy tackle or something, then they might not have the challenge for a penalty kick given for a tackle that didn’t actually land, or something.
The point is, the need for video replay is becoming ever apparent.
