Oriol Romeu aka Who?

By: Jack | July 21st, 2011

Word is that the club may be on the cusp of securing the services of Oriol Romeu. Wait, who?

Poor Barcelona. They really do seem to be scraping by at the moment, what with the signing of Alexis Sanchez finalized Wednesday and the inevitable transfer of Cesc Fabregas to come. Sad. To fund the later, it would seem the cash-strapped almighty is open to moving some of their more fancied academy prospects.

Romeu appears to be amongst those on the market, and we’re interested. Cool. Only thing is, I’m not actually privy to his skill set.

Fortunately, I know some experts that are. Our brothers in arms, We Ain’t Got Not History, have a fairly thorough profile of the 19-year-old. This thing is legit. Check it out here.

What did we learn from checking their article out? Well:

  • Romeu is a highly versatile midfielder, who, at least recently, has been deployed in a holding role.
  • He’s very much in the mold of a Michael Essien. Good pace, great strength, highly dynamic. Throw some Spanish technique in the mix for good measure. Sounds superb.
  • Like Gael Etock – who we have apparently also signed from Barcelona though I have yet to see any conformation – Romeu has refused a new contract at the Catalan club, and is entering to the final year on his current deal.
  • AVB apparently tracked Romeu last season while at Porto.

At the number being quoted (£4.4 million), this appears on the surface to be an excellent deal. Low risk, high reward. There are rumors that Barcelona are interested in having a buy-back clause after two years; that would, however, be absolutely ludicrous. We’re not a fucking feeder club. The Mirror mentions the potential for Barcelona to have first refusal if we were to sell, which seems far more plausible.

I was of the opinion that we needed to strengthen in midfield even before the loss of Essien. Now it’s a must. And, you know, with Arturo Vidal out of the picture, and after reading WAGNH, Romeu looks a solid bet. He may not represent an elite level option – not yet anyway – but I reckon he can do a job in stead of Ramires and Mikel.

We’ll keep you posted as this one develops. For now, peep the video below of Romeu in the UEFA U19s last summer.

  • I love this deal.

His first touch is excellent. He doesn't seem to be afraid of getting into aerial battle either. One thing he seems to be able to do that John Obi Mikel seems to struggle at times is passing the ball forward and not just sideways.

I can already see Fabergas story line playing out again.
    Romeu signs for Chelsea.
In a few years, he turns out to be midfield genius.
Then, Barcelona will coming knocking on the door saying, "the boy wants to come home."
Fabregas, who would have already replaced Xavi by then, will come out and say Romeu is being held against his will and that he is only acting in the best interest of Romeu.

    Romeu is a quality talent.

He doesn't have the flash of a Thiago, but he's easily the second best midfielder for Barcelona's B-team after the Spanish-Brazilian.

Oriol was out injured for several months last season with a knee injury, but I saw him play a B-team friendly a week ago and he looked fine.

Good positioning, intelligence, passing range, and physicality (183cm and 80kg is pretty big for a Catalan lad), he's got a lot of the tools to be successful in England. His obvious familiarity with 4-3-3 will help too.

If anyone is interested in seeing what this kid has to offer, I recommend checking him out in the upcoming U20 WC.

looks like the deal is close to closing, which is good news. barca is the best academy in the world but it seems they are clueless when it comes to transfers.

  • ph0bolus

Barcelona haven't exercised a release clause since 2003 for Luis Garcia, and even if they did the player could still say no.

  • you ain't getting such a high ceiling prospect without the buy-back clause, Barça won't let him go like that, Guardiola wants this kid.

english football, specially if he's a regular, will do wonders for him, hopefully we have an spanish version of essien for cheap in 2 seasons when he's back at Barcelona

  • Rondo

if barca "wants this kid" then why are they selling him for cheap?  regardless of buy back clause, this kid is surplus at Barca and is getting the boot from the club.

  • Looks excellent :) But i am not in favour of buy back clause at all. Its a disgrace for the player and club. You either loan or sell. This is bullshit.
