Transfers? Child Please…

I’ll admit, I’m something of a sucker when it comes to transfer rumors. I get swayed rather easily with even the faintest of suggestions that we might get this young-buck-on-the-rise or that disgruntled-superstar-with-bundles-of-talent. With the way the media juggernaut churns out these stories, it’s a bit hard to keep track of what’s fact versus fiction.

So let’s dissect the contenders and rule out the pretenders, shall we?

Got money, and you know it...

Got money, and you know it

Brass tax. We’re fittin’ to spend some bills this month. Frankly, who’d argue we don’t need to at this juncture? Our depth has been tested this year more so than before, and we’ve come up lame the last two months with some atrocious performances. An injection of life is necessary, and if Carlo’s not quite ready to throw the kids into frying pan, then it’s time to break out the shekels and bring back the free-wheelin’ days of the Abramovich era. On to the names…

David Luiz – Benfica

Priority number one by most accounts, is a central defender to beef up the ranks. With Alex on the shelf for at least another month, and Bruma venturing to Germany for some much-needed first-team experience, brining in a reliable CB is of the utmost importance. We’ve been linked with lots of names, but this one keeps popping up, and for good reason. Luiz, who we attempted to snatch last summer but ultimately failed to pry from Benfica, is young (23), athletic, and has vintage Riccy hair. All good signs. He’s plying his trade for a club that we’ve done business with as recently as last summer (splashing £18 million for Ramires) which has helped us advance the negotiations thus far. To date, we’ve had at least two concrete bids rejected, a £17 million bid and a £21 million bid respectively. The latest chatter suggests we’re prepping to meet the £25 million valuation the club have placed on Luiz. By all accounts, he’s the closest we’re getting to a ‘best bet’ this transfer window, and he’ll do wonders in shoring up our leaky backline for the remainder of the term. Still, adding another first-team CB puts us at 6. Overcrowding? Who cares, we need the help at this point.

Neven Subotic – Borussia Dortmund

Between Luiz and Neven, I would have taken the latter in the heartbeat. Young, rich and classy, meet young, tough, and nasty. He already has a reputation in Ze German league as being an enforcer, and a true team player (see Bane). All reports on the lad indicate he’s a better version of Vidic and would be a fixture in the CFC first XI for years to come. A natural successor to EBALJT once he hangs up his golden boots, but it seems Borussia Dortmund have no desire to part with their most-prized asset while their in contention for the German throne. A deal could be struck in the summer, but we need help now, apparently, so it seems that Luiz is our #1 target at this position.

Steven Pienaar – Tottenham (via Everton)

Wow, we really dodged a bullet on that one. £70K a week for a bench player? I know we’re the famous CFC and we’ve had more expensive role players in years past, but shit, I can’t honestly justify that much being spent on a guy who ranks in the EPL as the most fouled individual to play this year. Is he a target for punishment? Indeed. Does he make us any better? Hardly. ‘Arry Redknapp and his cockney slang can talk him up in the press as being the new Nico Kranjcar or what have you, but I’m just glad we didn’t waste the cash on someone that would deprive Joshy of valuable first-team minutes in the midfield. Plus, negative points for Pienaar and his overall greed in wanting that much per week. How the hell can he justify making more than Bane, who’s about to ink an extension worth £60-65K a week? Ridiculous. I’d just like to remind you all that this deal ALMOST FUCKING HAPPENED.

Alexis Sanchez – Udinese

Yes. Please. Make. This. Happen. Other than our shit defense this year, what’s the one thing we’ve truly been missing? A constant threat off the right side of the pitch that links play between the midfield and strikers. We’re blessed to have so many left-footed options on this squad, and the combination of Flo + Ash has been in constant motion for two years running. But we’ve become predictable in that sense. Teams know we’re looking to attack off the left side, so defenses are overloading and exposing the right flank. It’s nice to see BAWSE back on the pitch this year, slowing getting into peak condition, but we really need an attack-minded winger on the right a la Flo. So here’s our natural answer. Kid was nasty at the WC, and has expressed a keen desire to take his talents to England. The famous CFC have been in talks with his club and it looks like they’re stonewalling a bit on the pretense of holding out for a greater payday. Whatever the case may be, I suggest Romes pay a personal visit to the imperio of Udinese, Giampalo Pazzo, and have a checkbook chat post-haste, before that scunty Roberto Mancini finds out we’re interested and pips us to the punch. Which reminds me…

Romelu Lukaku – Anderlecht

Read an article a few days ago indicating that Lukaku’s advisors have been in Eastlands for 15 days hammering out contract specifics for a move to MCFC in July. I nearly died. How could Baby Didier want to do us like that? This is the kid that’s been saying for years he’d love nothing more than to come to the club and learn under the guidance of the Drogs for fucks sake! But then I realized, it has nothing to do with Romelu, or Anderlecht, and everything to do with the machine that Citeh have become in the transfer window. They bought Dzeko because we were interested for almost a year. They pipped us to Tevez because we showed strong interest and the player responded to our overtures. They beat Carlo to the Ballotelli dance this past summer. Now, after months of speculation surrounding Romelu, Mancini has finally caught wind that the kid might be as good as advertised, so he’s set his moneybag owner in motion and somehow has managed to convince him that they need YET ANOTHER FUCKING STRIKER. Run the list people: Tevez, Ballotelli, Dzeko, Adebayor, Jo. Add Lukaku to that mix, and you have to wonder what the logic is up north…

I digress. Romelu needs to take a deep breath and realize he has two options. Move to Citeh and wind up riding the pine and eventually being offloaded to a second-tier EPL squad, or, move to SW6 learn from Drogs in his last two years, and eventually become the centerpiece of our three-prong attack featuring Kakuta and Sturridge. You tell me what you’d do. Ok, now figure out who the fuck advises this chap and let them know what you think.

Sergio Aguero – Atletico Madrid

You have to wonder if this will ever come to fruition. We’ve been interested in the kid for two years running, and as recently as April of 2010, one Harry Harris, Football Correspondent for ESPN Soccernet ‘broke’ the news that Aguero and Atletico had negotiated a deal with CFC for the transfer to take place in the summer. Didn’t really happen as advertised, so now we’re doing the song-and-dance once again. Yeah, Aguero had his buyout reduced to £15 million, but it’ll take double that to pry the best young talent from the Castilian capital. I suppose the long-lens question is does he solve an immediate need or if he’s one for the future. My answer is that he serves to be both, but I’m not drinking the kool-aid this time. I’ve been burnt too often believing in this rumor that I can’t get excited until I see the kid in a CFC kit.

….now, mind you, those are just a sampling of the names we’ve been linked with since the start of the month. That list could snowball overnight into something far more sinister, or dwindle depending on what and where we opt to spend our cash. Carlo’s been playing it coy with the press, as recently as yesterday exclaiming that we never tabled a bid for Pienaar and denying its existence. It’s clear we need something to aid us through this ‘good bad moment’ but it’s unclear where the answers lie. From my seat, I can agree that we do in fact need to add depth to the squad, but at what cost? Does it make sense to overspend on young talents that might wind up disenchanted when we are at full fitness? Or does it do us better to search for bargains and bank on the youth in the ranks? Hope is not lost, folks, and let’s remind ourselves we’re still in the hunt to win the illusive Champions League and to three-peat the FA Cup, even if the PL is a hazy memory of months past. It makes sense that the club are playing their cards close to the vest. Why over-expose our hand when we know that other teams are making buying/selling decisions off of our inclinations.

If anything, I’d suspect we dip a toe in the market, take the temperature of Luiz, and if at all possible, start and finish our spending with him. I’d venture to guess that we might also start the lengthy negotiations with Udinese over a transfer of one Alexis Sanchez in the summer months. But if all we do is add to the back four, I think CFC fans alike would be well pleased with the end product. After all, we do have a young striker (see: Daniel Sturridge) who managed to net seven goals in the span of three days, but still can’t find minutes when it matters. So then there’s that to hang you hat on, right?

No mention of Kjaer? I'd rather prefer him over Luiz, mostly because of the price difference and the fact that Kjaer is in a much tougher league than Luiz, so his transition to the Premier league will inevitably be quicker and simpler.
EDIT: He's not cup tied either.

arn00b you made some fucking valid points mate & made me laugh my ass off with your quirky comments!! I dont understand why we arent addressing our attacking situation. When it comes to clinical finishers teams always invest because they understand they cant solely rely on youth. Our average age of the front 3 is 31 for fuck's sake.Studge,Gael & Fabio(who seems to be on his way out) cant be expected to bear the burden,we need age groups. All we have is the really old strikers, the really young & kalou. For all their attacking talent barca still purchased ibra & villa, the mancs chicharito though having 7 other strikers likewise arsenal. What Im saying is get fucking Aguero.Good track record & could bridge the age gap.

  • Ray

    Damn Manure Arsenal have won..
Spurs could only manage a draw and are still behind on goal difference..

  • arn00b

I don't think any of these are good options, honestly. Why should we pay that much for a defender when we can't create chances from midfield or score? What's with the obsession with the wings and crosses into the box?

The best modern sides are based on strong midfields, with the emphasis on attacking and chance-creating midfield. Is it a surprise that two of the Ballon d'or 3 finalists were midfielders? And everyone's other favorite, Sneijder, is a midfielder? It's not a coincidence that Arsenal are doing better at the same time as Nasri is maturing. Madrid with Ozil, Kaka...

Our midfield is one of the weakest in the big clubs in Europe.

In the Premier League, we have 6 goals from midfielders. 6. Hell, Dimitar almost scored 6 one weekend this season. Last season we had 33, not including the assists they made.

There is no way we're going to win anything if we're expecting Drogba and Ivanovic to score all our goals. But that's how it looks like. We want our attackers to score and our defense to score, but there's no expectation from (most of') the midfielders to even create the chance, much less to score. There's no pressure on Essien to score or create chances, that's not his job. Nor is it Ramires', that's not the player he is by Carlo's own admission. Nor Mikel, the least scoring midfielder in a top club.

We've had VdV offered to us, we passed. Schweinsteiger was on the market, pass. Ozil. Pass. Real Madrid regularly have garage sales of world class players and we prefer to pass, because we think the higher the price, the better the player.

I don't think that Carlo is being Coy. I think he honestly doesn't know what's going on. You think he knew what was going on with Ramires? He didn't, yet Ramires showed up in a blue shirt one morning.

If we buy expensively, it shows that the whole plan was a failure and it's the worst possible failure. We had four scenarios:

    1. Cut costs and give youth a chance.
    2. Spend a little and maintain the status quo.
    3. Overspend and try to buy the league (hey, it works)
    4. Try to cut costs and give youth a chance, fail, lose the league, screw cost-cutting, overspend in winter, newcomers take the youth places, youth continue to stagnate in reserves or ask to leave like Borini.

We are we choosing option 4?

We should stick to our plan, call this a transitional season, give our youth a chance, give them a whole season's worth. But a real chance, not 85th minute stuff. If they succeed, they stay, if not, they can be loaned, and if we see they're not CFC material, we can sell them in the summer.

Hopefully by then, Madrid will have another garage sale and we can buy some cheap quality, yeah?

  • Devin

I'm not disagreeing that we need attacking help, but we've got two ready-made options on the bench in Danny and Gael that need to be given a true chance to demonstrate their worth. If Gael gets loaned out, then I'd agree we need to add another piece, which is why I'm so keen on Alexis Sanchez. But addition by subtraction? How does that help us if we have to give up Kalou to get Luiz..

  • arn00b

Kalou is not getting younger and few would argue that he's getting much better. At some point, a decision has to be made about him.

This is his peak, transfer wise. He has the potential for some growth in the right conditions, he is at peak age, has shown that he can score. I don't see him becoming one of the league's top 15 or 20 strikers, and that's not good enough for Chelsea. We won the league last year because we had a great time AND the best striker in the world.

Kalou doesn't have it in him to become the next Drogba and quite frankly, I don't see him even wanting to. He doesn't mind sitting on the bench whereas so many strikers throw tantrums, make ultimatums or hand in transfer requests just to play.

Think about this, if we were to offer Kalou for free to any top club, would City take him? Would Barca? Madrid? Inter? Milan? United? Arsenal? Even Liverpool wouldn't.

From the best striker in the world, Drogba, to the 21st best striker in the league?
Let's see, in no order, Tevez, Drogba, Anelka, Bent, Torres, Berb, Rooney, Balo, RVP, Dzeko, Adebayor, Caroll, Defoe... are no doubt better than Kalou. I think I've got 13 there. I'm not going to add more, because then it becomes an argument of score ratios, games played, chances wasted and so on.
But do you see Kalou ever commanding a 20+ million transfer? Contending for top scorer? Other teams saying "how do we stop Kalou?"

I'm not dissing him, btw. He is a good person and a good player, but that's it. This is his peak and benching him doesn't spur him to train harder, shoot better or anything. He's too content with his mediocrity to the point where I read someone on this blog say "the 'meh' smug look off his face'" or something like that.

My issue with Kalou is this. Every minute Kalou plays, it's a minute that could've gone to Sturridge, Kakuta or Borini. They don't improve on the bench you know. In the history of football, no one has ever improved by spending a season on the bench.

Carlo's careful approach might ruin these kids' careers. Send them out. Let them f*** up. That's how they learn. SAF plays Rafael all the time, even when he gets needless red cards. That's what players do. They make mistakes. But they learn from them. Not so long ago, Vidic used to be a violent, almost psychopathic, volleyball/rugby player. Now he's one of the best defenders in the world. Our Bane used to love pulling shirts. Now he's our top player this season.

If they don't make mistakes, it means they're not human or they're on the bench, not improving.

Alexis Sanchez is good. But didn't Udinese say they want "the moon" for him? Do you want a yacht and a BJ with that? How stupid do you think Chelsea is?

I'm not so keen on adding another winger to the team, because the team is slowly becoming a team of fullbacks, wingers, and wide strikers, with no one really in attacking midfield, other than Lampard, who is not getting any younger and starting to get bad injuries.

We are ignoring 15% of the pitch where it's crucial to control it. If our crosses into the box don't work, we have no other tactic. We have no player than can dribble the defense, Essien and Mikel are not really known for their incisive passing, so we're left with no choice but long balls.

I'm not some tika-taka fanboy. Long balls have their place in the modern football side, just as crosses, tika-taka, incisive passing and even long throw ins. It's the diversity that makes teams stronger and we're becoming very one dimensional with our over-reliance on the flanks.

  • While I agree that we must address our lack of goals, your comment about this team being full of wingers is just plain wrong. Name a genuine winger in this side. Florent Malouda, far more midfielder than winger. Nicolas Anelka, striker. Gael Kakuta, attacking midfielder. Salomon Kalou, support striker. Benayoun, creative midfielder.

This side hasn't had genuine wing options since Duff and Robben. If you're going to play 4-3-3, you must have quality wing play. Thus, if Carlo plans to continue in this vein - which appears the case - Sanchez represents a superb option because he is a winger first and foremost.

As for Kalou, I could care less if he leaves. Throw him in the deal for Luiz.

  • arn00b

Yes, Jack, Anelka is essentially a striker, spent his history as such, Kalou a striker, but when they're played in 4-3-3 with Drogba, these 3 players who should be the spearhead of the attack are out wide on the wing, where they cut in or cross it in. I think people prefer Kalou on the wing, since if he were the lone striker, people would start throwing coins and Chelsea players again.

Malouda is most definitely a wide player. He played as a winger and sometimes as a fullback, but I hardly see him as a midfielder. I would post some links, but my posts with links don't seem to appear here. For Blanc, he played wide with Menez on the other side. For Domenech, it was Nic spearheading with Malouda wide, Ribery in the middle and Gouvou on the other side. Against Spurs, (1-1) he played wide, with Kalou on the other side and Nic in the middle. He plays wide and cuts in. He did play more centrally, moving wide a few times, resulting in poor performances, most recently the 0-0 against Aston Villa.

Read the Zonal Marking post about that game.

It says: "As mentioned in the report of Chelsea’s only other non-victory so far this season, away at Manchester City, they seem one established midfielder short. Still, at five points clear at the top, Ancelotti won’t be too concerned about that for now."

It was so plain obvious and it still is.

  • None of those three are genuine wingers. I don't give a shit where they are asked to play, that's not their natural position. I don't care where Malouda played for Le Guen, Blanc or Houllier, either; yes, he's an attacking wide player but he's not a winger. Like I said, Arjen Robben is a winger and Malouda is no Arjen Robben. Regarding your comment that his poor performances are a result of playing centrally - nonsense. They are simply from a lack of confidence. Refer to a selection of excellent performances from the left of the midfield last season.

As for the quote, we're a midfielder short because we're fucking playing three in midfield. Against four- and five-man midfields that's usually the case. When were rampant, it was quelled by the effectiveness of our fullbacks. Now that our form is shit, we've been exposed. In reality, as one of CFCNet's most respected commenters so effectively put it, we're playing a suicide system in search of Roman's entertaining football. It was always going to bite us, the question was when.

  • arn00b

Yes, Arjen is a winger and so is Cristiano and so is Kuyt at Liverpool, but they're all so different. You will see Malouda as a midfielder, but it says winger on his biography at Chelseafc .com. But you are free to your opinion, as everyone else is.

The quote did not mean that Chelsea is missing a midfielder in their formation, it said they're missing one in the squad. Last year the fullbacks' width compensated for the "all power in the midfield" lineup. Against United, it was Deco, Lampard, Ballack and Essien in a diamond formation, an incredibly powerful midfield, all capable of scoring, making assists, retrieving the ball, with excellent distribution and reading the play. The flipside is there was no width, but that's where the fullbacks compensated, coming forward. In a counter attack, the congested midfield would slow down the attack until the fullbacks returned to position.

This year, we have the same expectation from the fullbacks, to provide width, but absolutely no expectation from the midfield.

We could put Malouda in midfield, Yuri Zhirkov, and even Anelka, but that's not their natural position and the results have not been great.

I hope that Carlo would fight for whatever transfers he wants, but he's not a fighter. Considering that our coach is a man that can be pushed around by an old lady, they're saying that he's just waiting to be pushed out. Rumours are that there was a training game bust-up, Man City style, and the Drog-Mou reunion... the vultures are already circling.

Seems like we will sign somebody by monday..either Luiz or Kjaer.

But we need to beef up our attacking options too.The only name going around is alexis sanchez..but no word on its progress.

  • Aj

I can see either Kalou or boswinga moving for luiz.

  • Business is stoking - Sanchez on his way?
    http://tinyurl.com/67rvg5k

  • Add Simon Kjaer to that list, he seems like our plan B if we couldn't get David Luiz.

  • Kalou can be excellent at times but is a MORE frustrating player and I think the fanbase is split 50/50 on him/ Still if the rumours are true that he is going to go this may stall Gael Kakuta's loan move to Fulham or give Danny Sturridge more opportunity.

I hope it's not Kalou. Let's up the ante: one of Kalou's form-fitting kits, Paulo's corpse, plus the rights to Henrique Hilaro's autobiography entitled 'I Did It My Way'. That should do it?

  • Reports are suggesting that Benfica's President is in London to discuss a possible player swap and £18m deal for Luiz to come to Chelsea. The player Benfica are interested in is Kalou.
